1. Start With What You Need To Store
One of the biggest kitchen planning mistakes happens long before the cabinets are ordered: underestimating how much you actually need to store.  
It is easy to picture new worktops, cabinet colours and appliances. It is much harder to remember everything currently hiding inside drawers, cupboards and utility rooms. There is usually far more than you think.
Once you start listing what you actually own, the amount and type of storage your new kitchen needs becomes much clearer.

Air fryers and slow cookers

Coffee machines and kettles

Blenders, juicers and food processors

Baking trays and mixing bowls

Pots, pans and serving dishes

Lunch boxes and food containers

Spices, oils and baking ingredients

Before thinking about clever storage accessories, work out what actually needs storing.
Designing a beautiful pantry is pointless if the appliance you use every morning still ends up living on the worktop.
2. The Kitchen Storage Audit
Before designing your new kitchen, spend an hour going through the one you already have. Open every cupboard and drawer, check the utility room, look on top of cupboards and inside rarely used cabinets. Then divide what you find into four groups:
Anything in the final group is worth questioning before you design expensive storage around it. A new kitchen is also an opportunity to clear out duplicate utensils, expired food, unused gadgets and items that have simply accumulated over the years.

Do not design your new kitchen around clutter you do not actually want to keep.  
Declutter first. Design second.
3. Give Everything A Home
The most successful kitchens do not simply have lots of storage. They have the right storage in the right places.
Once we understand what needs storing, the next step is to understand how you use it. Instead of asking, “How many cupboards can we fit?”, we ask questions such as:

Where do you make your morning coffee?

Where do you unpack the shopping?

Which appliances do you use every day?

Do you cook mainly from scratch?

Do you bake or batch cook regularly?

Do children make their own breakfast or snacks?

Do you buy food, drinks or pet supplies in bulk?

Your answers tell us not only how much storage you need, but where that storage should be.
4. Store Things Where You Use Them
Think about making your morning coffee. You may need:

Mugs

Coffee or Tea

Kettle or coffee machine

Sugar

Spoons

Milk

Bin

If these are scattered around the kitchen, you repeat unnecessary movements every morning.  Keep them together and you have created a simple coffee zone.  The same principle applies throughout the kitchen.
Cooking zone
Pans, utensils, oils and spices positioned close to the hob.

Preparation zone
Knives, chopping boards, mixing bowls and preparation tools close to your main worktop.

Cleaning zone
Dishwasher, bin, cleaning products and everyday crockery positioned together so clearing away feels natural.

A well-planned kitchen reduces unnecessary movement by keeping the things you use close to where you need them.
5. Everyday Appliances Need a Plan
Modern kitchens contain far more small appliances than they did twenty years ago. The question isn&#8217;t simply whether you own an air fryer or coffee machine. It is where it should live.
Leave out
For appliances used every day that you&#8217;re happy to have on display.

Hide but keep accessible
For air fryers, coffee machines, toasters and mixers used regularly but not necessarily wanted permanently on the worktop.

Store away
For occasional or seasonal appliances that don&#8217;t need valuable everyday kitchen space.

Where an appliance will live can affect the kitchen design itself. Power sockets, ventilation, shelf heights, door mechanisms and the space needed to use an appliance safely should all be considered before the cabinetry is ordered.

6. Clear Worktops Without Hiding Your Life
A clutter-free kitchen does not mean everything has to be hidden away. It means the things you use regularly have somewhere sensible to live.
Breakfast cupboards, appliance garages and pocket-door units can keep frequently used appliances accessible — and sometimes permanently plugged in — while allowing them to disappear from view when they are not being used.
They can work particularly well for:

Coffee machines

Toasters

Air fryers

Blenders / juicers

Breakfast cereals

Tea and coffee

Everyday mugs and glasses

Do not add a breakfast cupboard simply because you have seen one online. They take up valuable cabinet space.
First decide what will actually live inside it — and whether you will use it every day.
7. Drawers or Cupboards?
For many everyday items, deep drawers are one of the biggest improvements you can make to a kitchen. Instead of crouching down and reaching into the back of a base cupboard, a drawer brings everything out to you.
Drawers work particularly well for:

Pots and pans

Plates and bowls

Food containers

Baking equipment

Dry ingredients

Cutlery and utensils

Cupboards still work well for:

Tall appliances

Large mixing bowls

Occasional equipment

Awkwardly shaped items

Seasonal cookware

The answer is not drawers or cupboards. A well-designed kitchen usually uses both — each where it works best.

Prime storage should be given to the things you use most.
Do not give one of the easiest-to-reach cupboards in your kitchen to something you use twice a year.

8. Pantry Storage: Bigger Is Not Always Better
A pantry can be fantastic, but size alone doesn&#8217;t make it useful. A narrow, well-organised pantry close to where groceries are unpacked can work better than a huge cupboard at the opposite end of the kitchen.
The important question is not “How big can the pantry be?” but “What actually needs to live in it?”

Shelf depth matters too. Very deep shelves can make smaller items difficult to see and encourage food to disappear at the back. Sometimes shallower, more accessible storage is the better solution.
The design should follow the contents — not the other way around.
9. Clever Storage Is Not Always Clever 
There are now specialist storage solutions for almost every part of a kitchen. Pull-out larders, corner systems, carousel units, pull-down shelves and internal organisers can all be useful. But adding more mechanisms does not automatically create a better kitchen.
They take up space themselves, add cost and introduce more moving parts. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. And sometimes a cabinet designed specifically around an awkward space will outperform an expensive accessory.

Never pay for clever storage simply because it looks impressive in a showroom.
Ask one question: “What problem does this solve in my kitchen?”
If there is no good answer, you probably do not need it.

10. Do Not Forget The Things Nobody Photographs
Beautiful kitchen photographs rarely show the everyday things every home still needs somewhere to store:

Bins and recycling

Vacuum cleaners

Mops & buckets

Ironing boards

Cleaning products

Pet food

Carrier bags

Bulk toilet rolls & kitchen rolls

Laundry products

Step stool or folding ladder

But these everyday essentials still need a home. If you have a utility room, some can be stored outside the kitchen. If you don&#8217;t, they need to be considered during the design rather than squeezed in after the cabinets arrive.
11. Storage Should Change With Your Family
The things you need to store today may not be the things your kitchen needs to accommodate five or ten years from now.

Children grow up

Cooking habits change

New appliances appear

Hobbies come and go

Accessibility needs can change

Where possible, we favour storage that can adapt with you rather than designing every centimetre around one very specific moment in your life.

Avoid making every cupboard too specialised. Flexible shelves, adjustable interiors and versatile drawers are often easier to adapt as your needs change.

It is surprisingly useful. We can learn a great deal about the storage you need simply by seeing what you&#8217;re currently trying to fit into your kitchen.
13. Before You Sign Off Your Storage Plan

Does everything you use every day have an obvious home?

Are frequently used items easy to reach?

Are cooking essentials stored close to where they’ll be used?

Have all your everyday appliances been accounted for?

Is there somewhere practical for bins and recycling?

Have you planned for bulk shopping and pet supplies?

Are your worktops likely to remain reasonably clear?

Is some of your storage flexible enough to adapt in the future?

If you&#8217;re struggling to decide where something will live now, it probably won&#8217;t become any easier once the kitchen is installed.

Every Home Tells a Story Before You Walk Through the Front Door
Our design process begins before we have even stepped inside your home. We are already observing details such as the property&#8217;s age and architectural style, parking and delivery access, possible skip locations and the type of work that has been carried out to neighbouring properties.
These early observations help us understand how the project might unfold and highlight practical considerations before a single cabinet is drawn. Once inside, our building background also helps us identify opportunities and potential issues that could influence the final kitchen design.  For example:

Is there a load-bearing wall that may require structural alterations?

Will Building Control approval be needed?

Could existing plumbing or drainage affect the layout?

Is the consumer unit likely to need upgrading?

Would creating a utility room or downstairs WC require a macerator system?

A beautiful kitchen is not just one that looks impressive in photographs.  It feels effortless to use every single day.  One of the biggest challenges homeowners face is visualising how they will move around a space. This is especially true after walls have been removed, an extension has been built or the layout has been completely transformed.
A room can look generous on a floor plan, but once cabinets, appliances and furniture are installed, it may feel very different. That is why we encourage our clients to think beyond the drawings and imagine how they will actually live in the space.  Good kitchen design is not about how many cabinets you can fit into a room.  It is about how naturally the room works for the people using it.
Before finalising your kitchen layout, try mentally walking through the everyday journeys you make in your kitchen.  If each one feels natural, comfortable and efficient, you are probably on the right track.

✓ Is there enough worktop space to prepare breakfast without feeling cramped?
A dedicated breakfast or coffee station can make busy mornings feel much more organised and enjoyable.

✓ Where will your everyday groceries be stored?
✓ Are the fridge, freezer and pantry positioned conveniently?
✓ Will heavy items like bottled water, pet food and bulk purchases be easy to put away?
Planning storage around your shopping routine saves time every single week.
🍳 3. Preparing & Cooking a Family Meal
✓ Is there enough preparation space beside the hob?
✓ Can two people cook together comfortably?
✓ Are your pans, utensils and spices stored close to where they are used?
✓ Can you interact with family or guests while cooking?
The best kitchens allow you to cook naturally without constantly walking backwards and forwards across the room.

✓ Can people move around without getting in each other&#8217;s way?
✓ Does the room feel welcoming as well as practical?
The kitchen has become the social heart of many homes.  A thoughtful layout allows everyone to enjoy the space together.
																															
Visualise Before You Commit
One of the simplest but most effective techniques we recommend is to physically mark out your proposed kitchen.  You can use masking tape, cardboard boxes or temporary furniture.  If you are planning an island, tape out its exact dimensions before your worktops are manufactured.  Live with it for a few days.  Walk around it.  Open imaginary cupboard doors.  Pull out chairs. Imagine preparing Sunday lunch or hosting Christmas dinner.
You may find that the island works better 200mm shorter, slightly wider or positioned a little differently. Revisit your kitchen designer&#8217;s CAD drawings and discuss any concerns before the worktops are manufactured.
Where possible, we also encourage clients to be available when an island or quartz/granite worktop is being positioned. Small practical questions can sometimes be resolved much more easily in person before everything is permanently fitted.

Do not just look at your new kitchen; live in it before it is built.  Walk through your morning routine.

Because the best kitchen layouts aren&#8217;t the biggest.  They&#8217;re the ones that fit the people who use them like a perfectly tailored glove.

Real NMB Example 
Sometimes the Smallest Changes Make the Biggest Difference
One project that always sticks in my mind. It involved a family who were convinced they wanted the largest kitchen island possible.  On paper, it looked fantastic.  The dimensions worked, there was plenty of seating, and it certainly made an impressive centrepiece.
Before ordering the worktops, however, we suggested something very simple. We marked the proposed island out on the floor. We used cardboard so the family could live with it for a few days before making the final decision.  Almost immediately, they realised something did not feel right.  Walking around the kitchen felt restricted.  Opening the dishwasher became awkward. The dining area suddenly felt much tighter than they had imagined from looking at the drawings alone.
Rather than continuing with the original plan, we reduced the island by just 200mm. It was a relatively small adjustment.  Yet the difference to how the kitchen felt was remarkable.  The room suddenly flowed naturally. The walkways felt comfortable and the family gained a much more practical space without losing the look they wanted.

If you are planning an island, do not rely solely on drawings or 3D visuals.  
Mark the footprint out on the floor using cardboard or masking tape and live with it for a few days. 
It is one of the simplest ways to test whether your proposed layout really works before your worktops are manufactured.

This does depend on the level of structural work required, the quality of finishes they choose and how they want to use the space.
Rather than aiming for an average figure, it is far more useful to understand what your own renovation involves.  A kitchen that keeps its current layout will cost less than one that changes it. The second kitchen may need a wall removed and require a new floor.  The client may choose custom cabinets and purchase premium appliances.
The most successful projects begin with clear priorities rather than a fixed number.  Once you understand the scope of the work and where you&#8217;d like to invest. It is much easier to build a realistic budget that reflects your home, your lifestyle and your long-term plans.

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is designing exclusively for their present circumstances.  Your new kitchen may remain in place for fifteen or twenty years. During that time, your family, routines and priorities may change considerably.

Different layouts work for different homes. The right choice depends on the room, available circulation space and how your household uses the kitchen. Here are examples of the standard layouts we generally find.
																															
Small Details Often Make The Biggest Difference
Homeowners naturally become excited about colours, finishes and feature worktops. However, some of the less glamorous decisions usually have the greatest effect on everyday life.  These include:

Socket positions
Task lighting
Drawer and cupboard internals
Bin storage
Dishwasher placement
Fridge and pantry positioning
Appliance clearances
Worktop preparation space
Extractor ducting
Door opening directions
Island circulation space

For example, placing the dishwasher close to the sink is only the beginning. It should also be positioned so that its open door does not block the main route through the kitchen. Secondly that the contents can be unloaded into nearby cupboards / drawers without too much moving around.
Likewise, an island can look impressive in a drawing. But it needs enough clearance around it. This keeps the space comfortable when drawers, dishwashers, and ovens are open.
A good design is often found in these small practical details.

Plan Appliances Before The Kitchen Is Ordered
Appliances should be considered early rather than added after the layout has been completed.  
Before ordering the kitchen, confirm:
☐ Which existing appliances will remain? 
☐ Which appliances will be replaced
☐ The exact make and model numbers
☐ Height, width and depth
☐ Electrical requirements
☐ Plumbing requirements
☐ Ventilation clearances
☐ Door-opening space
☐ Manufacturer installation requirements
☐ Likely delivery lead times
It is good practice sharing the precise appliance model numbers and dimensions in advance to your designer / fitters. This enables your kitchen designer to verify that cabinetry, utilities, and adjacent clearances properly fit the planned layout.

Lighting is one of the most frequently underestimated parts of a kitchen renovation.  Many homeowners spend thousands of pounds on cabinets and quartz countertops. Yet they only really think about lighting after the plastering is finished.  
Plan task lighting, pendants, switches, feature lighting and electrical circuits at the beginning.  Early planning gives you far more flexibility and almost always produces a better result.

Good Planning Helps Prevent Expensive Problems
The best kitchen renovations rarely happen by accident.  Taking time to review drawings, quotations and technical requirements before ordering can prevent delays and expensive alterations later.  
This becomes particularly important when a project includes:

Review The Drawings Carefully
Three-dimensional visuals are extremely useful for understanding how the completed kitchen may look.  However, homeowners should also review the practical plans and written quotation. 
Before approving the design, check:

These projects require careful planning and coordination between multiple trades.
We can also provide kitchens on a supply-only basis where suitable. However, many of the kitchen projects we complete across Manchester involve far more than simply replacing cabinets and worktops. Open-plan kitchen diners, utility rooms, structural knock-throughs, rewiring, plastering and new flooring can all add additional time to the overall project.
For a full kitchen renovation involving building work and multiple trades, a more realistic timeframe is often around 3–4 weeks, and occasionally longer depending on the size and complexity of the project.
One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is assuming that the kitchen installation itself is the entire project. In reality, a large amount of time goes into preparation, planning, coordinating trades and ensuring materials arrive at the correct stage of the renovation.

At NMB Kitchens & Bathrooms, the process usually begins with a home visit where we carry out a full site survey, take detailed measurements and discuss how the client wants the space to function. This is also where we assess existing plumbing, electrics, structural walls and any potential issues that may affect the renovation later on.
Following the initial visit, Nev will produce a high-level quotation along with CAD 3D kitchen plans to help visualise the new layout and design. A Typical Kitchen Renovation Timeline
While every project is different, most kitchen renovations follow a similar sequence of works. Larger renovations involving structural alterations or multiple rooms will naturally take longer than a straightforward kitchen replacement.
Below is a typical order of works for many of the kitchen projects we complete across Manchester.
1. Initial Survey & Design Consultation
The project begins with a home visit where measurements are taken, existing services are checked and the overall layout and design ideas are discussed with the client.
2. CAD Plans & Quotation
Following the survey, CAD 3D plans and a quotation are prepared. At this stage, layouts, finishes, appliances and functionality are refined before the project moves forward.
3. Final Design Approval & Pre-Installation Survey
Once the design is agreed, materials and appliances can be ordered. Before installation begins, measurements are checked again to ensure everything is correct prior to manufacture and delivery.
4. Preparation Before Works Begin
Clients are usually asked to empty kitchen units and prepare for a period without a functioning kitchen. Temporary cooking arrangements are often worth planning in advance, especially on larger renovations.
5. Removal Of The Existing Kitchen
The old kitchen, appliances, flooring and sometimes plaster are removed ready for the renovation works to begin. In older properties, walls are often taken back to brick where required to create a better finish.
6. Structural Works & Building Alterations
If the project involves a kitchen diner knock-through, utility room conversion or layout changes, structural work and steel installation will normally take place at this stage.
7. First Fix Electrics & Plumbing
New electrical wiring, lighting positions, sockets, plumbing pipework and extraction routes are installed before plastering begins.
8. Plastering & Preparation
Walls and ceilings are plastered and prepared ready for the kitchen installation phase.
9. Flooring
Depending on the project, flooring may be completed before or after the kitchen installation. Some floors may require levelling compounds or additional preparation time for drying.
10. Kitchen Installation
Kitchen cabinets, panels, appliances and associated joinery are installed and carefully adjusted into position.
11. Worktop Templating
For quartz, granite or solid surface worktops, templates are usually created after the kitchen units have been fully installed.
12. Worktop Installation
Once manufactured, the new worktops are installed and prepared for final connections.
13. Second Fix Electrics & Plumbing
Appliances, sinks, taps, lighting and final electrical connections are completed during the second fix stage.
14. Final Finishing Touches
Once installation is complete, final snagging and adjustments are carried out before the project is handed over to the client.
