1. Start With What You Need To Store
One of the biggest kitchen planning mistakes happens long before the cabinets are ordered: underestimating how much you actually need to store.
It is easy to picture new worktops, cabinet colours and appliances. It is much harder to remember everything currently hiding inside drawers, cupboards and utility rooms. There is usually far more than you think.
Once you start listing what you actually own, the amount and type of storage your new kitchen needs becomes much clearer.

Air fryers and slow cookers

Coffee machines and kettles

Blenders, juicers and food processors

Baking trays and mixing bowls

Pots, pans and serving dishes

Lunch boxes and food containers

Spices, oils and baking ingredients

Water bottles and bulk shopping

Cleaning products

Pet food and supplies

BBQ equipment

Seasonal appliances

NMB Designer’s Tip
Before thinking about clever storage accessories, work out what actually needs storing.
Designing a beautiful pantry is pointless if the appliance you use every morning still ends up living on the worktop.
2. The Kitchen Storage Audit
Before designing your new kitchen, spend an hour going through the one you already have. Open every cupboard and drawer, check the utility room, look on top of cupboards and inside rarely used cabinets. Then divide what you find into four groups:
Anything in the final group is worth questioning before you design expensive storage around it. A new kitchen is also an opportunity to clear out duplicate utensils, expired food, unused gadgets and items that have simply accumulated over the years.
Use Every Day

Use Once a Week

Use Occasionally

Rarely Used

NMB Designer’s Tip
Do not design your new kitchen around clutter you do not actually want to keep.
Declutter first. Design second.
3. Give Everything A Home
The most successful kitchens do not simply have lots of storage. They have the right storage in the right places.
Once we understand what needs storing, the next step is to understand how you use it. Instead of asking, “How many cupboards can we fit?”, we ask questions such as:

Where do you make your morning coffee?

Where do you unpack the shopping?

Which appliances do you use every day?

Do you cook mainly from scratch?

Do you bake or batch cook regularly?

Do children make their own breakfast or snacks?

Do you buy food, drinks or pet supplies in bulk?

Your answers tell us not only how much storage you need, but where that storage should be.
4. Store Things Where You Use Them
Think about making your morning coffee. You may need:

Mugs

Coffee or Tea

Kettle or coffee machine

Sugar

Spoons

Milk

Bin

If these are scattered around the kitchen, you repeat unnecessary movements every morning. Keep them together and you have created a simple coffee zone. The same principle applies throughout the kitchen.
Cooking zone
Pans, utensils, oils and spices positioned close to the hob.

Preparation zone
Knives, chopping boards, mixing bowls and preparation tools close to your main worktop.

Cleaning zone
Dishwasher, bin, cleaning products and everyday crockery positioned together so clearing away feels natural.

A well-planned kitchen reduces unnecessary movement by keeping the things you use close to where you need them.
5. Everyday Appliances Need a Plan
Modern kitchens contain far more small appliances than they did twenty years ago. The question isn’t simply whether you own an air fryer or coffee machine. It is where it should live.
Leave out
For appliances used every day that you’re happy to have on display.

Hide but keep accessible
For air fryers, coffee machines, toasters and mixers used regularly but not necessarily wanted permanently on the worktop.

Store away
For occasional or seasonal appliances that don’t need valuable everyday kitchen space.

Where an appliance will live can affect the kitchen design itself. Power sockets, ventilation, shelf heights, door mechanisms and the space needed to use an appliance safely should all be considered before the cabinetry is ordered.
Kitchen Pantry Storage

Frequently used appliances can remain accessible without permanently occupying the worktop
6. Clear Worktops Without Hiding Your Life
A clutter-free kitchen does not mean everything has to be hidden away. It means the things you use regularly have somewhere sensible to live.
Breakfast cupboards, appliance garages and pocket-door units can keep frequently used appliances accessible — and sometimes permanently plugged in — while allowing them to disappear from view when they are not being used.
They can work particularly well for:

Coffee machines

Toasters

Air fryers

Blenders / juicers

Breakfast cereals

Tea and coffee

Everyday mugs and glasses

NMB Designer’s Tip
Do not add a breakfast cupboard simply because you have seen one online. They take up valuable cabinet space.
First decide what will actually live inside it — and whether you will use it every day.
7. Drawers or Cupboards?
For many everyday items, deep drawers are one of the biggest improvements you can make to a kitchen. Instead of crouching down and reaching into the back of a base cupboard, a drawer brings everything out to you.
Drawers work particularly well for:

Pots and pans

Plates and bowls

Food containers

Baking equipment

Dry ingredients

Cutlery and utensils

Cupboards still work well for:

Tall appliances

Large mixing bowls

Occasional equipment

Awkwardly shaped items

Seasonal cookware

The answer is not drawers or cupboards. A well-designed kitchen usually uses both — each where it works best.
NMB Designer’s Tip
Prime storage should be given to the things you use most.
Do not give one of the easiest-to-reach cupboards in your kitchen to something you use twice a year.

8. Pantry Storage: Bigger Is Not Always Better
A pantry can be fantastic, but size alone doesn’t make it useful. A narrow, well-organised pantry close to where groceries are unpacked can work better than a huge cupboard at the opposite end of the kitchen.
The important question is not “How big can the pantry be?” but “What actually needs to live in it?”

Tinned & packet foods

Pasta & rice

Cereals

Baking ingredients

Snacks

Bottled drinks

Pet food

Bulk purchases

NMB Designer’s Tip
Shelf depth matters too. Very deep shelves can make smaller items difficult to see and encourage food to disappear at the back. Sometimes shallower, more accessible storage is the better solution.
The design should follow the contents — not the other way around.
9. Clever Storage Is Not Always Clever
There are now specialist storage solutions for almost every part of a kitchen. Pull-out larders, corner systems, carousel units, pull-down shelves and internal organisers can all be useful. But adding more mechanisms does not automatically create a better kitchen.
They take up space themselves, add cost and introduce more moving parts. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. And sometimes a cabinet designed specifically around an awkward space will outperform an expensive accessory.
NMB Designer’s Tip
Never pay for clever storage simply because it looks impressive in a showroom.
Ask one question: “What problem does this solve in my kitchen?”
If there is no good answer, you probably do not need it.

10. Do Not Forget The Things Nobody Photographs
Beautiful kitchen photographs rarely show the everyday things every home still needs somewhere to store:

Bins and recycling

Vacuum cleaners

Mops & buckets

Ironing boards

Cleaning products

Pet food

Carrier bags

Bulk toilet rolls & kitchen rolls

Laundry products

Step stool or folding ladder

But these everyday essentials still need a home. If you have a utility room, some can be stored outside the kitchen. If you don’t, they need to be considered during the design rather than squeezed in after the cabinets arrive.
11. Storage Should Change With Your Family
The things you need to store today may not be the things your kitchen needs to accommodate five or ten years from now.

Children grow up

Cooking habits change

New appliances appear

Hobbies come and go

Accessibility needs can change

Where possible, we favour storage that can adapt with you rather than designing every centimetre around one very specific moment in your life.
NMB Designer’s Tip
Avoid making every cupboard too specialised. Flexible shelves, adjustable interiors and versatile drawers are often easier to adapt as your needs change.
If you’re also thinking about how your kitchen needs may change over time, read Guide 3: Kitchen Layout Ideas.

12. The NMB Kitchen Storage Checklist
Before your kitchen design begins, use this checklist to make a note of the things your new kitchen may need to accommodate. Tick the items you currently store and add anything we’ve missed that is specific to your household.
Small appliances
☐ Air fryer☐ Slow cooker☐ Coffee machine☐ Toaster☐ Blender / juicer☐ Stand mixer☐ Food processor
Cooking and eating
☐ Pots and pans☐ Baking trays☐ Chopping boards☐ Serving dishes☐ Glassware☐ Food containers☐ Spices, oils and dry goods
Household
☐ Cleaning products☐ Recycling☐ Vacuum cleaner☐ Mop and bucket☐ Ironing board
Real-life essentials
☐ Packed lunch items☐ Pet supplies☐ Bulk shopping☐ BBQ equipment☐ Seasonal appliances
Do not worry about deciding where everything should go yet. The purpose of the audit is simply to make sure nothing gets forgotten before the design begins.
NMB Designer’s Tip
Photograph the inside of your cupboards and drawers before your kitchen design appointment.
It is surprisingly useful. We can learn a great deal about the storage you need simply by seeing what you’re currently trying to fit into your kitchen.
13. Before You Sign Off Your Storage Plan

Does everything you use every day have an obvious home?

Are frequently used items easy to reach?

Are cooking essentials stored close to where they’ll be used?

Have all your everyday appliances been accounted for?

Is there somewhere practical for bins and recycling?

Have you planned for bulk shopping and pet supplies?

Are your worktops likely to remain reasonably clear?

Is some of your storage flexible enough to adapt in the future?

If you’re struggling to decide where something will live now, it probably won’t become any easier once the kitchen is installed.

Why Lifestyle Should Come Before Layout
One of the biggest misconceptions about kitchen design is that there is one perfect kitchen layout. There isn’t. The best kitchen is not necessarily an L-shaped kitchen, a U-shaped kitchen or one with a large island. It is the kitchen that works effortlessly for the people using it every single day. That is why, before we discuss cabinets, worktops, or colours, we take time to learn how our clients live. A great kitchen design starts with people—not products.
NMB Designer’s Tip
Never choose a layout simply because you have seen it on Pinterest or Instagram.
The best kitchens are designed around the people who use them, not the latest trends.
 skip render: ucaddon_image_card_content_box
Every Home Tells a Story Before You Walk Through the Front Door
Our design process begins before we have even stepped inside your home. We are already observing details such as the property’s age and architectural style, parking and delivery access, possible skip locations and the type of work that has been carried out to neighbouring properties.
These early observations help us understand how the project might unfold and highlight practical considerations before a single cabinet is drawn. Once inside, our building background also helps us identify opportunities and potential issues that could influence the final kitchen design. For example:

Is there a load-bearing wall that may require structural alterations?

Will Building Control approval be needed?

Could existing plumbing or drainage affect the layout?

Is the consumer unit likely to need upgrading?

Would creating a utility room or downstairs WC require a macerator system?

Are there ventilation or fire regulation requirements that need to be considered?

These are the kinds of practical details that many homeowners simply are not expected to know. However, identifying them early can save considerable time, money and frustration later in the project.
Looking Beyond the Kitchen
A successful kitchen renovation is about much more than replacing cabinets. It is about understanding how the room connects with the rest of your home. Sometimes the best solution is not changing the kitchen itself. It might involve removing a wall to create an open-plan kitchen-diner, relocating a boiler, moving a doorway or rethinking how a utility room functions.
By looking at the whole property, not just the kitchen, we often find opportunities homeowners had not considered before.
NMB Designer’s Tip
Every property has its own story to tell. Taking time to understand that story before design begins almost always leads to better decisions.
It also helps reduce surprises and results in a kitchen that’s designed around your home—not simply fitted into it.

There Are No Right or Wrong Answers
When we ask these questions, we are not looking for a “correct” answer. We are simply trying to understand how your home works.
Every answer helps us design a kitchen that feels natural to use. It may mean creating more preparation space for family cooking, allowing wider walkways for busy households, planning somewhere for children to do their homework or simply making sure the things you use every day are exactly where you need them.
The goal is not to create the biggest kitchen. It is to create the kitchen that works best for you.

Every property is different. This is why we do not begin with a favourite layout. We begin by understanding your home.
Good Kitchen Design Is About Flow
A beautiful kitchen is not just one that looks impressive in photographs. It feels effortless to use every single day. One of the biggest challenges homeowners face is visualising how they will move around a space. This is especially true after walls have been removed, an extension has been built or the layout has been completely transformed.
A room can look generous on a floor plan, but once cabinets, appliances and furniture are installed, it may feel very different. That is why we encourage our clients to think beyond the drawings and imagine how they will actually live in the space. Good kitchen design is not about how many cabinets you can fit into a room. It is about how naturally the room works for the people using it.
Before finalising your kitchen layout, try mentally walking through the everyday journeys you make in your kitchen. If each one feels natural, comfortable and efficient, you are probably on the right track.
☕ 1. The Morning Coffee Journey
✓ Where are the mugs stored?
✓ How many steps does it take to reach the kettle or coffee machine?
✓ Is the milk easily accessible?
✓ Is there enough worktop space to prepare breakfast without feeling cramped?
A dedicated breakfast or coffee station can make busy mornings feel much more organised and enjoyable.
🛒 2. Putting the Shopping Away
✓ Where will your everyday groceries be stored?
✓ Are the fridge, freezer and pantry positioned conveniently?
✓ Will heavy items like bottled water, pet food and bulk purchases be easy to put away?
Planning storage around your shopping routine saves time every single week.
🍳 3. Preparing & Cooking a Family Meal
✓ Is there enough preparation space beside the hob?
✓ Can two people cook together comfortably?
✓ Are your pans, utensils and spices stored close to where they are used?
✓ Can you interact with family or guests while cooking?
The best kitchens allow you to cook naturally without constantly walking backwards and forwards across the room.
🍽 4. Clearing Up Afterwards
✓ Can the dishwasher be opened without blocking the main walkway?
✓ Are plates, glasses and cutlery stored nearby?
✓ Is the bin positioned conveniently beside the sink?
✓ Does unloading the dishwasher feel effortless?
A few small layout changes here can save thousands of unnecessary steps over the lifetime of your kitchen.
🥂 5. Entertaining Friends & Family
✓ Can guests comfortably chat with you while you’re cooking?
✓ Is there enough seating around the island or dining area?
✓ Can people move around without getting in each other’s way?
✓ Does the room feel welcoming as well as practical?
The kitchen has become the social heart of many homes. A thoughtful layout allows everyone to enjoy the space together.

Visualise Before You Commit
One of the simplest but most effective techniques we recommend is to physically mark out your proposed kitchen. You can use masking tape, cardboard boxes or temporary furniture. If you are planning an island, tape out its exact dimensions before your worktops are manufactured. Live with it for a few days. Walk around it. Open imaginary cupboard doors. Pull out chairs. Imagine preparing Sunday lunch or hosting Christmas dinner.
You may find that the island works better 200mm shorter, slightly wider or positioned a little differently. Revisit your kitchen designer’s CAD drawings and discuss any concerns before the worktops are manufactured.
Where possible, we also encourage clients to be available when an island or quartz/granite worktop is being positioned. Small practical questions can sometimes be resolved much more easily in person before everything is permanently fitted.
NMB Designer’s Tip
Do not just look at your new kitchen; live in it before it is built. Walk through your morning routine.
Prepare an imaginary family meal, unload an imaginary dishwasher and picture friends gathering around the island.
The more you experience your layout before ordering, the more confident you will be that it is the right fit.
Small Changes Can Make A Big Difference

Moving an island by just a few hundred millimetres to improve circulation.

Allowing more preparation space beside the cooker.

Repositioning the dishwasher closer to the crockery drawers.

Widening a walkway so two people can comfortably cook together.

Creating better access between the sink, hob and food preparation areas.

Often it is the smallest adjustments that create the biggest improvements. Individually, these changes may seem minor. However, collectively, they can transform the way your kitchen feels to use every single day. The best kitchen layouts are not measured by how many cabinets they contain. They are measured by how naturally they fit around the people who use them.
Rules Are Helpful… But They’re Not Absolute
For decades, kitchen designers have followed one of the most well-known design principles: the kitchen work triangle. The principle aims to reduce unnecessary movement while preparing meals. It is a sound idea and one we still consider during kitchen design. However, no two households use their kitchen in exactly the same way.
The Traditional Kitchen Work Triangle
✓ Sink ✓ Hob ✓ Fridge The goal was simple. Create the shortest and most efficient route between the three areas used most often during cooking. For many kitchens, it still works brilliantly.
However, Modern Kitchens Have Changed
Today’s kitchens are no longer just places to prepare meals. They have become home offices, family gathering spaces, coffee stations, homework hubs and places to entertain. Rather than one simple triangle, most modern kitchens now operate using multiple working zones. Modern kitchens often include features such as:

Coffee Stations

Air Fryers

Steam Ovens

Wine Coolers

Boiling Taps

Appliance Garage

Breakfast Cupboards

Pantry Storage

Charging Stations

Recycling Centres

Pet Feeding Areas

Utility Zones

Think in Zones, Not Just Triangles
Instead of asking, “Where should the sink, hob and fridge go?” Ask yourself, “How do we actually use our kitchen every day?” Small decisions like these often make a much bigger difference than simply following a traditional triangle. For example:

Keep tea, coffee, mugs and the kettle together

Store pans and utensils close to the hob

Position the dishwasher beside the crockery drawers

Keep spices beside your main preparation prea

Store children’s snacks where they can help themselves safely

Create dedicated breakfast or baking stations if space allows

Design Around Your Lifestyle
There are times when following the traditional work triangle makes perfect sense. There are also times when breaking the rules creates a much better kitchen. The layout should reflect those priorities.

If one partner loves cooking while another enjoys baking

If entertaining is priority

If children regularly help preparing meals

If mobility or accessibility needs to be considered

NMB Designer’s Tip
The best kitchens do not follow rules; they follow routines.
That is why we spend far more time understanding how you live than simply deciding where to place your sink and hob.
Design For Tomorrow, Not Just Today
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is designing a kitchen only around the way they live today, without considering how their lives may change over the coming years. A new kitchen is a significant investment. Many will remain in place for 15 to 20 years or more, so it’s worth thinking beyond your current circumstances. Thinking ahead now can prevent expensive alterations later. Ask yourself:

Will our teenagers need somewhere to make breakfast before school?

Could elderly parents come to live with you in the future?

Will anyone in the household benefit from easier-to-reach storage or lower worktops?

Are you likely to continue working from home?

Could hobbies, cooking habits or entertaining change over time?

Is this your forever home or are you planning to move within a few years?

Are you planning a future extension or loft conversion that may affect how you use the space?

Future-Proof Your Investment
Many of the best design decisions do not necessarily benefit you today—they benefit you years from now. These are relatively small decisions during the design stage. However, they can make a significant difference over the lifetime of your kitchen.

Installing wider walkways for improved accessibility

Choosing deep drawers instead of low cupboards to reduce bending

Adding extra electrical sockets for future appliances

Running additional wiring while the walls are open

Allowing space for a larger fridge freezer if your family grows

Designing a utility room that can adapt to changing household needs

Including flexible storage that can evolve as your style changes

Your Kitchen Should Grow With Your Family
The kitchens we enjoy designing the most are those that continue to work beautifully for many years after they’ve been installed. Children grow up. Careers change. People retire. Families expand. Parents grow older. Life never stands still.
A well-designed kitchen should be flexible enough to evolve alongside those changes. Rather than becoming outdated or impractical after just a few years.
Future-Proofing Checklist
☐ Is this your forever home?
☐ Could your family grow over the next 10 years?
☐ Will anyone’s mobility or accessibility needs change?
☐ Do you have enough electrical capacity for future appliances?
☐ Have you allowed flexibility for changing technology?
☐ Can your storage adapt as your family evolves?
☐ Will this layout still work if your daily routine changes?
NMB Designer’s Tip
When planning a new kitchen, imagine yourself standing in the same room ten years from now.
Will it still work just as well? If the answer is yes, you are making choices that will add value long after the excitement of a new kitchen fades.
The Best Kitchen Is Not The Biggest…

It is the One That Fits You Like a Glove
The kitchens we are most proud of are not always the biggest or the most expensive. They are the ones where every detail has been considered. The spice drawer sits beside the cooker because that is where it is needed. The dishwasher is positioned so unloading plates feels natural. The pantry stores exactly what the family uses every week.
The dog has its own feeding station. The utility room keeps the washing, muddy boots and everyday clutter out of sight. These details may seem small on their own, but together they create a kitchen that simply feels right. Because the best kitchen layouts aren’t the biggest. They’re the ones that fit the people who use them like a perfectly tailored glove.

One project that always sticks in my mind. It involved a family who were convinced they wanted the largest kitchen island possible. On paper, it looked fantastic. The dimensions worked, there was plenty of seating, and it certainly made an impressive centrepiece.
Before ordering the worktops, however, we suggested something very simple. We marked the proposed island out on the floor. We used cardboard so the family could live with it for a few days before making the final decision. Almost immediately, they realised something did not feel right. Walking around the kitchen felt restricted. Opening the dishwasher became awkward. The dining area suddenly felt much tighter than they had imagined from looking at the drawings alone.
Rather than continuing with the original plan, we reduced the island by just 200mm. It was a relatively small adjustment. Yet the difference to how the kitchen felt was remarkable. The room suddenly flowed naturally. The walkways felt comfortable and the family gained a much more practical space without losing the look they wanted.
What This Taught Us

Floor plans do not always tell the whole story

Small adjustments can dramatically improve the way a kitchen feels

Living with a layout before ordering often leads to better decisions

The best kitchens balance appearance with Practicality

Sometimes less really is more

NMB Designer’s Tip
If you are planning an island, do not rely solely on drawings or 3D visuals.
Mark the footprint out on the floor using cardboard or masking tape and live with it for a few days.
It is one of the simplest ways to test whether your proposed layout really works before your worktops are manufactured.
Before You Sign Off Your Layout
Take five minutes to walk through these questions before approving your kitchen plans.

Workflow
☐ Does the layout suit the way your family cooks?
☐ Can two people prepare meals together comfortably?
☐ Does moving around the kitchen feel natural?

Practicality
☐ Is there enough worktop space where you need it most?
☐ Are your appliances positioned logically?
☐ Can cupboard and appliance doors open without obstruction?

Future Planning
☐ Have you considered how your family’s needs may change?
☐ Have you physically marked out your proposed island or peninsula?

Final Check
☐ Can you picture yourself happily using this kitchen every day?

NMB Designer’s Tip
If you answer “No” to even one of these questions, do not ignore it.
Small design changes are almost always easier and less expensive to make before your kitchen is ordered. Changes made afterwards usually cost more.
Common Kitchen Layout Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
Even the most beautiful kitchens can become frustrating to live with if the layout has not been carefully planned. Over the years, we have seen many homeowners inherit kitchens that looked fantastic once installed. Yet in reality, they never quite worked in everyday life. The good news is that most of these problems can be avoided with careful planning. A layout that works beautifully in one property may feel completely wrong in another.
1. Choosing Style Over Practicality
It’s easy to fall in love with a kitchen you have seen on Instagram, Pinterest or in a showroom. However, every home is different. A layout that works beautifully in one property may feel completely wrong in another. Design around your home and your lifestyle—not someone else’s.
2. Squeezing an Island Into a Room That’s Too Small
Kitchen islands remain one of the most requested features we see. However, an island should improve the room—not dominate it. If walkways become cramped or appliance doors can’t open comfortably, the island may be doing more harm than good. Sometimes a peninsula or simply more uninterrupted worktop space provides a better solution.
3. Forgetting About Everyday Movement
A kitchen should allow people to move naturally through the room. A good design is about creating effortless movement, not obstacles. Think about:

Opening the dishwasher

Walking to the fridge

Carrying hot food

Children walking through the kitchen

Guests gathering while you cook

4. Designing Around Cabinets Instead of Daily Life
Cabinets do not use your kitchen. People do. Rather than asking, “Where can we fit another cupboard?” Ask, “How do we actually use this space every day?” The answers almost always lead to a better layout.
5. Ignoring Future Lifestyle Changes
The kitchen you are designing today may still be part of your home in twenty years’ time. Designing with the future in mind protects your investment.

Growing families

Working from home

Entertaining

Accessibility

Ageing parents

6. Leaving Structural Considerations Too Late
Removing walls, relocating boilers, installing steel beams or moving drainage can all influence the final layout. Discussing these possibilities early allows realistic budgets, accurate quotations and fewer surprises once work begins.
7. Prioritising Symmetry Over Functionality
Perfectly symmetrical kitchens often look stunning. However, moving a cabinet by just a few centimetres creates a much more practical kitchen. Good design balances appearance with usability.
8. Forgetting About Storage During the Layout Stage
Storage should not be something that is added afterwards. The layout should support where these items naturally belong. Think about:

Food storage

Pots & pans

Small appliances

Recycling

Pet supplies

Cleaning products

Children’s snacks

9. Rushing Into a Final Decision
A kitchen is one of the biggest investments most homeowners will make. Making small changes during design is almost always easier than regretting them after the kitchen is installed.

Take your time

Review your plans

Ask questions

Walk through your layout

Mark out your island

Sleep on it

NMB Designer’s Tip
The layouts we are most proud of are not always the biggest or the most expensive.
They are the ones where clients tell us six months later: “It Just Works”! That is always our goal.
The Golden Rules of Kitchen Layout

Design around people, not cabinets

Think in zones, not just the work triangle

Allow generous walkways

Plan for the future

Test your layout before ordering

Keep preparation space where it is needed

Make storage intentional

Do not rush your decisions

Create a kitchen that feels effortless

NMB Kitchen Renovation Academy: Guide 02 Setting A Realistic Kitchen Budget
Introduction
Kitchen Renovation Budget: One of the first questions homeowners ask when planning a new kitchen is:
“How much should I budget for my kitchen renovation?”
It’s a perfectly sensible question, but the answer is rarely as straightforward as people expect.
Every home is different. Every family has different priorities. And every renovation comes with its own opportunities and challenges. While two kitchens may look similar when they’re finished, the work required to achieve them can be very different.
At NMB Kitchens, we actually prefer not to begin by asking for your budget.
Instead, we start by understanding how you want your new kitchen to work. Who does most of the cooking? Is the space going to be used for entertaining? Or is it an area that you want the kids to use while preparing meals? Once we understand what matters to you, we can recommend the best way to spend your budget. This will help you get the best possible result.
A successful kitchen is not created by spending the most money. It is created by spending money in the right places.
This chapter will explain:
Where the cost of a kitchen renovation really goes.Highlight the areas that often catch homeowners by surprise.Share practical advice on where your budget will make the biggest difference.“Spend wisely, not simply. A successful kitchen renovation isn’t measured by how much you spend. It’s measured by how well every pound is invested.”
We aim to help you plan with confidence and avoid unnecessary surprises. We will help steer you to make informed decisions so that you will be happy with it for many years to come.

A Kitchen Renovation Budget Is More Than Just Cabinets
When most people begin budgeting for a new kitchen, they naturally focus on the kitchen itself. For example, the cabinets, doors, worktops and appliances. After all, these are the elements you can see, touch and compare relatively easily.
However, a successful kitchen renovation is rarely just about replacing cabinets.
Depending on your property’s age, your home’s layout, and the project’s scope, your investment may include more work. This can include structural changes, electrical upgrades, plumbing updates, plastering, flooring, and decorating. Other essential work may also be needed to complete the finished result.
This is why it’s often difficult to compare quotations based on price alone. Two kitchens may look almost identical when completed. However, one project may require significantly more building work while another simply replaces existing furniture within the same layout.
Understanding exactly where your kitchen renovation budget is being invested allows you to make informed decisions. It can help you prioritise the features that matter most and avoid surprises later in the project.
Before setting a kitchen renovation budget, it’s helpful to think of your renovation as a collection of individual projects. All working together, they create one finished kitchen. Breaking it down into smaller chunks often helps tackle these kinds of projects.
Where Does Your Kitchen Budget Go?

Every renovation is unique. Some projects may require only a selection of the items shown above. While others may involve additional work depending on the age, condition and layout of the property. Your final budget should always reflect the specific requirements of your home and meet the local regulations and guidance.
As the illustration above shows, the cost of a complete kitchen renovation extends far beyond the furniture itself.
Some homes require very little preparation before installation begins, while others may involve removing internal walls, upgrading electrics, replacing plumbing, installing new flooring or complying with Building Control requirements.
The exact balance will be different for every home, but understanding these categories from the outset helps you build a more realistic budget and reduces the likelihood of unexpected costs further into the project.
Rather than asking, “How much does a kitchen cost?” a better question is:
“What work does my renovation actually involve?”
That simple change in thinking can make budgeting far easier and help you plan your investment with greater confidence.

Do Not Underestimate Hidden Costs
One of the biggest challenges when renovating a kitchen is that some problems are hidden. You often don’t find them until you remove the old kitchen.
Behind the cabinets, beneath the flooring and inside the walls, there may be issues that have remained hidden for many years. In most homes, nothing unexpected is discovered. However, especially in older homes, it’s common to find work that needs fixing before your new kitchen is installed.
Older Homes Often Need a Little More Attention
If you’re renovating a Victorian, Edwardian, or 1930s home, remember that many services may have changed over time. This could be done either by the homeowners or qualified tradespeople.
Previous extensions, DIY improvements and historic repairs can all influence what is discovered once work begins.
This does not mean older homes are more difficult to renovate. In fact, they often create the most characterful kitchens. However, it does reinforce the importance of allowing for a sensible kitchen renovation contingency fund. Doing your own due diligence to work with experienced professionals who are comfortable adapting to what they find.
While these findings can affect the overall budget. They are often an opportunity to improve the safety, reliability and longevity of your home. Addressing them during a renovation is usually far easier and more cost-effective. Than discovering them after your beautiful new kitchen has already been fitted. Some of the more common discoveries include:

Outdated or overloaded electrical wiring.
Damaged or uneven plasterwork.
Uneven subfloors requiring levelling.
Ageing plumbing or leaking pipework.
Rotten floorboards or signs of damp.
Structural alterations carried out by previous owners.
Chimney breasts or redundant pipework hidden behind units.
Missing or inadequate support where walls have previously been removed.

Every property is different, which is why it’s impossible to predict every eventuality before work begins. The key is to leave some room in your budget.Work with a company that communicates clearly. They should let you know if anything unexpected comes up.
NMB Designer’s Tip
The cheapest quotation is not always the least expensive renovation.
Some quotations only include the work that can be seen during the initial survey. Others take the time to discuss potential risks from the outset and explain how they would be handled if they arise.
At NMB, we would rather have an honest conversation before work begins. That way we can present unexpected costs before your kitchen has already been removed. Having worked on many property types across Manchester, we know areas where issues may arise. We will always be honest and, where possible, investigate during the quoting stage. This may mean opening up a small section of the ceiling – flooring to check. Do not worry, we will clean up afterwards!
What’s Hidden Behind Your Existing Kitchen?

Spend Once – Enjoy Every Day
One of the biggest misconceptions about kitchen renovation budgeting is that spending more automatically creates a better result.
In reality, the most successful kitchen renovations are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones where the investment has been focused on the features that improve everyday life.
When planning your budget, ask yourself one simple question: “Will I notice and appreciate this every day for the next 15 or 20 years?” If the answer is yes, it’s often worth investing a little more.
A well-designed layout makes cooking easier. Robust cabinets still feel solid years later. Carefully planned lighting transforms the room’s mood. Durable worktops stand up to everyday family life. These features deliver value long after the excitement of a new kitchen fades.
On the other hand. It is easy to be drawn towards the latest smart appliances or premium features. You know the ones that sound impressive in a showroom but are rarely used once everyday life takes over.
That is not to say these products are not worthwhile. If they will genuinely enhance the way you use your kitchen. The key is making conscious decisions based on your own lifestyle rather than simply choosing the highest specification available.
Ultimately, a beautiful kitchen is not created by spending the most money. It is created by investing in the things that matter most to you.
NMB Designer’s Tip
Every pound does not have to be spent today. Some finishing touches, accessories and decorative features can always be added in the future. Good layout, quality installation and durable cabinetry are far more difficult. Ultimately more expensive to change once your kitchen is complete.
People rarely regret investing in a better layout or higher-quality cabinetry. They far more often regret the compromises they notice every single day. Before deciding where to reduce your kitchen renovation budget, have in mind this thought:
Which parts of your kitchen will you interact with every single day? For example, you will open your drawers hundreds of times each week. Prepare meals on your worktops. Switch your lights on every morning and walk across your flooring countless times over the years. These everyday experiences often have a greater impact on your enjoyment of the space. Than the features that simply look impressive on a specification sheet.

How to Reduce Costs Without Reducing Quality
Every kitchen renovation has a budget, and very few homeowners have unlimited funds.
The good news is that reducing costs does not necessarily mean compromising on the finished result. With careful planning, it is often possible to achieve the same overall look and functionality while making sensible decisions about where to spend and where to save.
The key is understanding which elements are difficult to change once your kitchen has been installed. In addition, those which can be easily be upgraded in the future. By prioritising the features that have the greatest impact on everyday life, you can create a beautiful kitchen that feels considered, practical and built to last without exceeding your budget.
Smart Ways to Reduce Costs

NMB Designer’s Tip
Think in phases, not compromises.
A kitchen does not have to include every optional extra on day one. Focus your budget on creating a strong foundation, then add finishing touches as your needs and budget evolve.
Reducing costs should not mean lowering your expectations. Instead, think of your budget as a series of priorities. Choose to invest in the elements that affect the way your kitchen looks, functions and lasts. By making thoughtful savings elsewhere, it is possible to create a space you will enjoy for many years without compromising on quality.
A well-planned kitchen budget is not about spending less. It is about spending intelligently.
Keep a Contingency Fund In You Kitchen Renovation Budget
No matter how carefully you plan, every renovation has the potential to uncover something unexpected. It might be outdated wiring hidden behind old cabinets. Uneven flooring revealed once the existing kitchen has been removed. Ageing plumbing that no longer meets current standards or structural work that was not visible during the initial survey.
These discoveries do not necessarily mean something has gone wrong. In fact, they’re often a normal part of renovating an existing home. The important thing is to be prepared.
Setting aside a contingency fund gives you the flexibility to deal with unforeseen issues without compromising the overall project. Instead of making rushed decisions or cutting your new kitchen plan mid-renodel, you can move forward with confidence. You’ll know you planned for the unexpected.
Many renovation professionals recommend allowing around 10–15% of your overall project budget as a contingency, although the appropriate amount will depend on the age of your property, the condition of the existing services and the complexity of the work being undertaken.
If your renovation is straightforward and everything goes to plan, that’s excellent news. Any unused contingency simply remains yours. But if unexpected work is required, having that financial buffer can make the difference between a smooth renovation and a stressful one.
Think of it less as an additional cost and more as peace of mind.
Plan For The Unexpected

Peace of Mind Is Part of the Budget
One of the greatest benefits of careful budgeting isn’t simply knowing how much your project is likely to cost. It’s having the confidence to move forward knowing you’ve considered the unexpected and planned accordingly.
A realistic budget doesn’t remove uncertainty altogether, but it does help ensure that unexpected discoveries don’t become unexpected crises.
By allowing for a sensible contingency from the outset, you can make decisions calmly, keep your project moving and focus on creating a kitchen you’ll enjoy for many years to come.
A realistic budget is not about limiting your choices. It is about giving yourself the confidence to make the right ones.
By tracking where your money goes, you can plan for surprises. You can also focus on the most important features. This will help you build a kitchen that adds value long after the renovation ends. A well-planned budget is not simply a financial plan. It is the foundation of a successful kitchen renovation. To request a copy of the Kitchen Renovation Budget checklist, use the contact form and state Kitchen Budget Checklist.

Every Home Is Different
By now, you will hopefully have realised that there is not a “correct” kitchen renovation budget. Two homeowners with identical-sized rooms may invest very different amounts. This does depend on the level of structural work required, the quality of finishes they choose and how they want to use the space.
Rather than aiming for an average figure, it is far more useful to understand what your own renovation involves. A kitchen that keeps its current layout will cost less than one that changes it. The second kitchen may need a wall removed and require a new floor. The client may choose custom cabinets and purchase premium appliances.
The most successful projects begin with clear priorities rather than a fixed number. Once you understand the scope of the work and where you’d like to invest. It is much easier to build a realistic budget that reflects your home, your lifestyle and your long-term plans.
Here at NMB, we ask our clients to share the precise appliance model numbers and dimensions in advance. This enables us to verify that cabinetry, utilities, and adjacent clearances properly fit the planned layout.
It can also reduce the risk of discovering during installation that an appliance is unavailable. This may then result in additional delays and other knock-on effects. It also limits the risk that the appliance does not fit or requires a supply that has not been installed during first fix. Ultimately, this may cost you more money and extend the project time. An experienced kitchen fitter will ask you up front for these measurements and expected timeframes for delivery.

Why Planning Is the Most Important Stage of a Kitchen Renovation

NMB Kitchen Renovation Academy: Guide 01 Planning a New Kitchen
Planning A New Kitchen Starts Before You Choose Cabinets
Most homeowners begin planning a new kitchen by thinking about colours, door styles and worktops. That is completely understandable — these are the elements you will see and enjoy every day.
However, after over 20 years of designing and fitting kitchens across Greater Manchester, we found one common factor:
They were carefully planned and never rushed.
The choices you make before you order your kitchen often shape the finished room more than the door style. This is true whether you choose shaker, slim shaker, or handleless doors. Good planning determines:

How naturally you move around the kitchen
Whether there is enough practical storage
How comfortable the room feels to use
weather appliances fit and function correctly
How well the lighting works
Will the kitchen continue to meet your needs in ten or twenty years

A beautiful kitchen matters, but it should also have a layout and features that work well for its users.
In this guide, we explain;- Kitchen Planning Around Your Lifestyle, Common Kitchen Planning Mistakes and provide a Kitchen Planning Checklist.

Every Family Uses Its Kitchen Differently
No two households live in exactly the same way, so no two kitchens should be designed in exactly the same way. Before discussing cabinet ranges, door colors, or worktops, it is important to understand how the household uses its home. Questions worth considering include:
Kitchen Planning
☐ Do you cook from scratch every evening or only occasionally?
☐ Who normally prepares meals?
☐ Is the kitchen mainly a family space?
☐ Do you regularly entertain friends and relatives?
☐ Do you have young children?
☐ Are you planning to start or grow your family?
☐ Do pets need their own feeding or storage area?
☐ Does anyone have mobility or accessibility requirements?
☐ Is this your forever home?
☐ Do you prefer generous storage or a very minimalist appearance?
☐ Will the kitchen also be used for working, homework or socialising?
The answers influence almost every design decision that follows. A kitchen designed for a keen home cook may need lots of prep space, easy pan storage, and well placed ingredients.
A busy family kitchen may need extra refrigeration, additional surfaces that are easy to clean. Or somewhere to store the kids packed lunches and a spot to hide everyday clutter that comes with having children. Or simply having a partner like mine that is in love with Tupperware!
A couple who entertain regularly may prioritise seating, lighting, wine storage and a sociable island. There is no universally perfect kitchen. There is only the kitchen that best supports the way you live

If you are planning a larger renovation or open-plan kitchen diner, you can also read our guide to kitchen diner knock-through projects in Manchester.

Think Beyond Today’s Kitchen
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is designing exclusively for their present circumstances. Your new kitchen may remain in place for fifteen or twenty years. During that time, your family, routines and priorities may change considerably.
Before finalising the design, consider what your household could look like in the future. You may eventually:

Work from home more frequently
Have children or grandchildren using the space
Need easier-to-reach storage
Replace gas cooking with induction
Buy larger or additional appliances
Entertain more often
Require more accessible circulation space
Need to accommodate an less mobile relative
Want the kitchen to support future resale value

Planning ahead does not mean trying to predict everything. It means avoiding decisions that unnecessarily limit the kitchen later.
Consider Major Improvements While The Room Is Stripped Back
A kitchen renovation offers a rare chance to improve parts of your home. Changing them later would be hard and disruptive. For example:

Would removing a wall create a better long-term layout?
Should the boiler be relocated?
Does the consumer unit require upgrading?
Could plumbing or drainage be improved?
Is this the right time to replace an uneven floor?
Would better insulation improve the room?
Should additional wiring be installed for future appliances?
Could natural light be improved with larger doors, windows or roof glazing?

These improvements may increase the initial investment, but completing them while the room is already undergoing major work can be far more cost-effective than returning to them several years later.
Kitchen Layout Options
Different layouts work for different homes. The right choice depends on the room, available circulation space and how your household uses the kitchen. Here are examples of the standard layouts we generally find.

Small Details Often Make The Biggest Difference
Homeowners naturally become excited about colours, finishes and feature worktops. However, some of the less glamorous decisions usually have the greatest effect on everyday life. These include:

Socket positions
Task lighting
Drawer and cupboard internals
Bin storage
Dishwasher placement
Fridge and pantry positioning
Appliance clearances
Worktop preparation space
Extractor ducting
Door opening directions
Island circulation space

For example, placing the dishwasher close to the sink is only the beginning. It should also be positioned so that its open door does not block the main route through the kitchen. Secondly that the contents can be unloaded into nearby cupboards / drawers without too much moving around.
Likewise, an island can look impressive in a drawing. But it needs enough clearance around it. This keeps the space comfortable when drawers, dishwashers, and ovens are open.
A good design is often found in these small practical details.
 skip render: ucaddon_image_card_content_box
Plan Appliances Before The Kitchen Is Ordered
Appliances should be considered early rather than added after the layout has been completed.
Before ordering the kitchen, confirm:
☐ Which existing appliances will remain?
☐ Which appliances will be replaced
☐ The exact make and model numbers
☐ Height, width and depth
☐ Electrical requirements
☐ Plumbing requirements
☐ Ventilation clearances
☐ Door-opening space
☐ Manufacturer installation requirements
☐ Likely delivery lead times
It is good practice sharing the precise appliance model numbers and dimensions in advance to your designer / fitters. This enables your kitchen designer to verify that cabinetry, utilities, and adjacent clearances properly fit the planned layout.
It can also reduces the risk of discovering during installation that an appliance is unavailable. This may then result in additional delays and other knock on effects. It also limits the risk that the appliance does not fit or requires a supply that has not been installed during first fix.
NMB Designer’s Tip
Lighting is one of the most frequently underestimated parts of a kitchen renovation. Many homeowners spend thousands of pounds on cabinets and quartz countertops. Yet they only really think about lighting after the plastering is finished.
Plan task lighting, pendants, switches, feature lighting and electrical circuits at the beginning. Early planning gives you far more flexibility and almost always produces a better result.

Good Planning Helps Prevent Expensive Problems
The best kitchen renovations rarely happen by accident. Taking time to review drawings, quotations and technical requirements before ordering can prevent delays and expensive alterations later.
This becomes particularly important when a project includes:

Structural wall removal
Steelwork
Building Control
New drainage
Boiler relocation
Upgraded electrics
Extraction ducting
Fire doors
Ventilation requirements
Floor-level changes
Underfloor heating

These elements need to be coordinated with the kitchen design rather than treated as separate decisions.
For example, an extractor route may affect ceiling construction. A structural beam may influence wall-unit heights. A raised finished floor level may affect doors, plinths and appliance clearances. Early coordination allows these details to be incorporated properly rather than solved retrospectively on site. This is much easier to manage when using one company to complete the renovation. As it reduces the stress and the risk of miscommunication and delays when dealing with individual muti skilled trades.
Review The Drawings Carefully
Three-dimensional visuals are extremely useful for understanding how the completed kitchen may look. However, homeowners should also review the practical plans and written quotation.
Before approving the design, check:
☐ Cabinet and appliance positions
☐ Door opening directions
☐ Drawer arrangements
☐ Island dimensions
☐ Seating overhangs
☐ Sink and tap positions
☐ Socket locations
☐ Lighting positions
☐ Worktop joins
☐ Splashbacks
☐ Storage accessories
☐ Bespoke items
☐ Items included in the quotation
☐ Excluded items from the quotation
Ask questions whenever something is unclear. It is much easier to change a drawing than a cabinet that has already been manufactured. If you do it in text always follow up with an email as this helps both parties keep track of what has changed and why.

Kitchen Planning Questions To Consider
Before moving ahead with your design, ask yourself:
☐ How will we use the kitchen on an ordinary weekday?
☐ What currently frustrates us about the room?
☐ Who cooks, cleans and unloads the dishwasher?
☐ Do we have enough practical preparation space?
☐ Where will small appliances be stored?
☐ Have we chosen or measured the main appliances?
☐ Is there enough space around an island or peninsula?
☐ Have lighting and sockets been discussed?
☐ Could our household needs change over the next ten years?
☐ Are any structural, electrical or plumbing improvements required?
☐ Have we reviewed the design more than once?
☐ Do we fully understand what is included in the quotation?
Create A Kitchen You Will Enjoy For Years
A new kitchen is one of the largest investments many homeowners make. Although it’s easy to concentrate on how the completed room will look. The kitchens that still perform exceptionally well years later are usually the ones where each functional detail was planned before installation ever started. Our advice is straightforward: Do not rush.
Take time to imagine how you will cook, entertain, work and live in the space. Ask questions. Challenge the design. Explore alternative layouts. Review the plans carefully and think beyond current trends. A well-planned kitchen does not only look beautiful on the day it is installed. It continues to make everyday life easier for many years afterwards.

Understanding Realistic Kitchen Renovation Timelines
One of the most common questions we get asked is:“How long will my new kitchen take?” The honest answer is — every kitchen project is different.
A simple kitchen replacement may take about 2–3 weeks.A larger renovation with structural work, knock-throughs, new flooring, plastering, and electrics may take 3–4 weeks or more.
At NMB Kitchens & Bathrooms, many of the projects we complete across Manchester involve full kitchen renovations, including utility rooms, structural alterations, open-plan living spaces, flooring, plastering and electrical work. These projects require careful planning and coordination between multiple trades.
We can also provide kitchens on a supply-only basis where suitable. However, when homeowners buy a kitchen from one company and arrange installation separately, responsibility for resolving missing, damaged or incorrect items can sometimes become unclear. A fully managed project gives one point of contact responsible for coordinating the kitchen, installation and associated work from start to finish.
What many homeowners do not realise is that a kitchen renovation starts long before the first cabinet is installed. Surveys, design work, appliance choices, lead times, and scheduling trades all play a major role. They help keep a project running smoothly.
In this guide, we explain the usual kitchen installation timeline. We also cover what can affect it. Proper planning can help you avoid unnecessary delays.

How Long Does It Actually Take to Fit a Kitchen?
For a straightforward kitchen replacement with no structural alterations, a typical kitchen installation will usually take around 2–3 weeks from rip-out to completion.
However, many of the kitchen projects we complete across Manchester involve far more than simply replacing cabinets and worktops. Open-plan kitchen diners, utility rooms, structural knock-throughs, rewiring, plastering and new flooring can all add additional time to the overall project.
For a full kitchen renovation involving building work and multiple trades, a more realistic timeframe is often around 3–4 weeks, and occasionally longer depending on the size and complexity of the project.
One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is assuming that the kitchen installation itself is the entire project. In reality, a large amount of time goes into preparation, planning, coordinating trades and ensuring materials arrive at the correct stage of the renovation.
Lead times can also affect the schedule. Bespoke cabinetry, painted kitchens, quartz worktops, steel fabrication, specialist flooring and made-to-order doors or windows may all require additional planning before installation even begins.
A well-organised kitchen company should guide you through this process early on so there are no major surprises once work starts on site.

The Planning & Design Stage
A successful kitchen renovation starts long before the first cabinet is installed.
At NMB Kitchens & Bathrooms, the process usually begins with a home visit where we carry out a full site survey, take detailed measurements and discuss how the client wants the space to function. This is also where we assess existing plumbing, electrics, structural walls and any potential issues that may affect the renovation later on.
Following the initial visit, Nev will produce a high-level quotation along with CAD 3D kitchen plans to help visualise the new layout and design. In many cases, there are then multiple conversations with the client to fine-tune the details before work begins. Browse our kitchen ranges. This stage is incredibly important because decisions made early on can have a major impact on the installation timeline later.

appliance choices may affect cabinet sizing
extractor positions can alter ducting routes
lighting layouts affect electrical planning
flooring thickness can impact kitchen heights
structural work may require steels or additional building preparation

One of the most common causes of delays is homeowners not finalising appliances or design decisions early enough. Certain appliances, bespoke cabinetry, painted kitchen ranges, quartz worktops, windows, doors and steelwork can all come with lead times that need factoring into the schedule.
Before installation begins, Nev will also typically carry out another survey to recheck measurements and confirm that everything is correct before kitchens, worktops and materials are ordered for site.
Good planning at this stage helps keep the entire project running smoothly once the renovation is underway. View some of our recent Manchester kitchen projects.
A Typical Kitchen Renovation Timeline
While every project is different, most kitchen renovations follow a similar sequence of works. Larger renovations involving structural alterations or multiple rooms will naturally take longer than a straightforward kitchen replacement.
Below is a typical order of works for many of the kitchen projects we complete across Manchester.
1. Initial Survey & Design Consultation
The project begins with a home visit where measurements are taken, existing services are checked and the overall layout and design ideas are discussed with the client.
2. CAD Plans & Quotation
Following the survey, CAD 3D plans and a quotation are prepared. At this stage, layouts, finishes, appliances and functionality are refined before the project moves forward.
3. Final Design Approval & Pre-Installation Survey
Once the design is agreed, materials and appliances can be ordered. Before installation begins, measurements are checked again to ensure everything is correct prior to manufacture and delivery.
4. Preparation Before Works Begin
Clients are usually asked to empty kitchen units and prepare for a period without a functioning kitchen. Temporary cooking arrangements are often worth planning in advance, especially on larger renovations.
5. Removal Of The Existing Kitchen
The old kitchen, appliances, flooring and sometimes plaster are removed ready for the renovation works to begin. In older properties, walls are often taken back to brick where required to create a better finish.
6. Structural Works & Building Alterations
If the project involves a kitchen diner knock-through, utility room conversion or layout changes, structural work and steel installation will normally take place at this stage.
7. First Fix Electrics & Plumbing
New electrical wiring, lighting positions, sockets, plumbing pipework and extraction routes are installed before plastering begins.
8. Plastering & Preparation
Walls and ceilings are plastered and prepared ready for the kitchen installation phase.
9. Flooring
Depending on the project, flooring may be completed before or after the kitchen installation. Some floors may require levelling compounds or additional preparation time for drying.
10. Kitchen Installation
Kitchen cabinets, panels, appliances and associated joinery are installed and carefully adjusted into position.
11. Worktop Templating
For quartz, granite or solid surface worktops, templates are usually created after the kitchen units have been fully installed.
12. Worktop Installation
Once manufactured, the new worktops are installed and prepared for final connections.
13. Second Fix Electrics & Plumbing
Appliances, sinks, taps, lighting and final electrical connections are completed during the second fix stage.
14. Final Finishing Touches
Once installation is complete, final snagging and adjustments are carried out before the project is handed over to the client.

Some homeowners also choose to arrange their own decorating or specialist flooring contractors separately, particularly for more bespoke finishes or accredited flooring systems.

Common Reasons Kitchen Projects Get Delayed
Even with careful planning, kitchen renovations can occasionally run longer than expected. The important thing is having an experienced team that can identify potential problems early and keep the project moving where possible.
Below are some of the most common causes of delays we see during kitchen renovations.
Changes To The Design Midway Through
One of the biggest causes of delays is when layouts, finishes or appliance choices change after work has already started. Even small changes can sometimes affect cabinet sizes, electrical layouts, plumbing positions or worktop fabrication.
This is why we always encourage clients to spend time finalising the design and appliance selections before installation begins.
Appliance & Material Delays
Appliances, bespoke cabinetry, painted doors, quartz worktops, steels, windows and specialist materials can all come with lead times.
We always advise clients to check stock availability carefully before ordering, particularly with appliances, as delays can have a knock-on effect throughout the entire project.
Hidden Issues After Rip-Out
Older properties across Manchester can sometimes reveal unexpected issues once the old kitchen is removed. Uneven walls, damaged plaster, outdated electrics, old pipework or hidden structural problems may all require additional work.
Where possible, we try to minimise surprises by using our experience and knowledge of local property types during the survey stage. In some cases, we may even recommend opening up sections of flooring or ceilings before quoting so we can better understand what we are working with.
This allows us to give clients a far more accurate understanding of the likely works and costs involved from the beginning.
Structural & Flooring Preparation
Some projects require additional floor levelling, subfloor repairs or drying time before installation can continue. Structural alterations and steel installation can also occasionally uncover additional work once walls are opened up.
An experienced renovation company should normally factor these possibilities into the schedule where practical.
Trade Coordination
Kitchen renovations rely on multiple trades working together in the correct sequence. Electricians, plumbers, plasterers, flooring installers, worktop suppliers and kitchen fitters all need coordinating properly to keep the project progressing smoothly.
Like any industry, unexpected illness or last-minute issues can occasionally affect schedules. However, having an experienced project-managed team in place usually helps minimise disruption and keep works moving forward.
Living Without A Kitchen
One thing many homeowners underestimate is how disruptive a full kitchen renovation can be day to day. If your project is expected to last several weeks, it is important to think ahead about temporary cooking arrangements and general day-to-day living while works are taking place. There are companies that hire out mobile kitchen facilities to minimise the impact on the household.
Good preparation before the project starts can make the renovation process much less stressful overall.
Why Good Project Management Matters
A kitchen renovation is not just about fitting cabinets.
On most projects, there are multiple trades, deliveries, suppliers and stages that all need coordinating correctly to keep the installation running smoothly. Timing is incredibly important, especially when structural work, plastering, flooring, quartz worktops and appliances are all involved.
Poor planning at the beginning of a project often leads to delays, confusion and unexpected costs later on.
At NMB Kitchens & Bathrooms, we prefer to manage the full renovation process wherever possible rather than simply supplying units and leaving homeowners to organise the rest themselves. Because of our building background, we are comfortable managing structural alterations, kitchen diner knock-throughs, utility rooms and more complex kitchen renovation projects across Manchester
Having one experienced point of contact throughout the renovation also makes communication far easier for homeowners. Questions can be answered quickly, trades can be coordinated properly and issues can often be resolved before they become larger problems.
Another advantage is flexibility. While unexpected issues can occasionally arise on any renovation project, Nev is not just involved in the design side of the business — he also has hands-on experience with fitting and building work. This means we can often step in quickly to help keep projects progressing if schedules unexpectedly change.
Ultimately, a well-managed kitchen renovation should feel organised, planned and transparent from the very beginning. Good preparation and communication usually make a far bigger difference to the overall experience than simply how quickly cabinets can be installed.

Final Thoughts – Key Takeaways
Every kitchen renovation is different. That is why there is no true “one size fits all” answer for installation times.
A smaller kitchen replacement may only take a couple of weeks. While larger projects with structural changes, utility rooms, flooring, plastering, and custom finishes can take several weeks to complete.
In our experience, the key to a successful kitchen renovation is:
Good planningClear communicationRealistic expectations from the beginningFinalising the layout before work startsConfirming appliance positions earlyAgreeing lighting and electrical requirements in advance
Taking care of these decisions early can help avoid unnecessary delays once work is underway.

Why Choose an Independent Kitchen Company?

Why Choose an Independent Kitchen Company?
 skip render: ucaddon_blox_btn_group
Where To Start With Comparing Kitchen Companies?
Choosing a new kitchen is a major investment for a homeowner. Therefore it’s only natural to compare a range of suppliers before making a decision. Many homeowners will visit a mixture of national kitchen retailers, trade suppliers and independent kitchen companies. This is to be able to compare design ideas, pricing and overall service.
Large national brands such as Wren Kitchens, Howdens, IKEA UK and Wickes Kitchens can all offer attractive showrooms and extensive product ranges. However, many homeowners are also increasingly exploring the benefits of working with an independent kitchen specialist such as ourselves. This is generally for projects requiring more flexibility, tailored design or full renovation management.
In our guide, we will review key differences homeowners may compare when choosing a kitchen company. This is from cabinet specifications and design flexibility through to installation, communication, project management and aftercare.

Why Most Homeowners Compare Multiple Kitchen Companies
Kitchens are a significant investment and every company works slightly differently in terms of design, pricing, installation and project management. Therefore it is sensible to compare a range of suppliers before making a decision.
While price is often one of the first things people compare, it’s rarely the only factor worth considering. Two kitchens can appear similar on paper while differing significantly in cabinet specifications, installation standards, aftercare, project coordination and overall customer experience. For this reason, many homeowners choose to compare a mixture of national retailers, trade suppliers and independent kitchen specialists. This allows them to decide beforehand which company best suits their project, budget and expectations.
Independent Kitchen Specialists vs National Kitchen Retailers
National kitchen retailers can offer impressive showroom displays, broad product ranges and heavily marketed promotional offers. For many straightforward kitchen replacements, they may provide a solution that suits both budget and style preferences.
However, independent kitchen specialists often provide a different experience — particularly for homeowners looking for a more tailored approach, greater flexibility or full renovation management.
Rather than working through separate departments for sales, surveying, installation and aftercare, many independent companies offer a more personal process with one team overseeing the project from initial design through to completion.
This can be particularly beneficial for:

Older properties
Open plan renovations
Kitchen Diner knock throughs
Bespoke layouts
Structural alterations
Projects involving multiple trades

For many homeowners, the decision often comes down to how much flexibility, communication, & support they want during their renovation.
What To Compare Beyond Just Price
While pricing is naturally important, many homeowners also compare factors such as cabinet construction, installation experience, project management and overall renovation support. The points below can help provide a broader understanding of what to look for when comparing kitchen companies.

Comparison AreaWhy It Matters

Home Survey ProcessAccurate surveys are essential to help avoid fitting issues and unexpected delays.

Design FlexibilityFlexible design options can help homeowners create a kitchen tailored to their space and lifestyle.

Door Finish OptionsA wider choice of finishes can provide greater design flexibility and visual style options.

Colour Matching AvailableSome suppliers offer bespoke colour matching while others provide stocked ranges only.

Cabinet ConstructionRigid and flat-pack kitchens can differ in feel, installation time and assembly methods.

Cabinet Side ThicknessCan affect overall durability and cabinet strength over time.

Back Panel ThicknessThicker back panels can improve cabinet rigidity and long-term stability.

Shelf ThicknessStronger shelves are generally more resistant to sagging over time.

Hinge & Drawer BrandsHinges and drawer systems can influence long-term reliability and overall feel.

Internal Cabinet FinishesInternal finishes can affect the overall appearance and premium feel of the kitchen.

Appliance OptionsWider appliance choices can help homeowners better tailor their kitchen to their needs and budget.

Worktop ChoicesDifferent suppliers may offer varying levels of material choice and customisation.

Installation MethodSome companies use employed fitting teams while others work with subcontract installers.

Installation CoordinationCoordinating multiple trades effectively can significantly improve the renovation experience.

Project ManagementClear project management can help reduce stress and improve coordination throughout the renovation.

One Point Of ContactHaving one main contact can help simplify communication throughout the project.

Structural RenovationParticularly important for open-plan kitchens, extensions and kitchen diner knock-throughs.

Lead TimesLead times can vary depending on stock availability, bespoke finishes and project complexity.

Aftercare SupportReliable aftercare can provide reassurance if adjustments or replacements are needed later.

Questions To Ask Before Choosing A Kitchen Company
Choosing a kitchen company is about far more than simply comparing prices or door styles. A kitchen renovation can involve multiple stages, trades and decisions. Therefore it is important to understand exactly how each company works before committing.
Below are some of the questions many homeowners choose to ask when comparing kitchen companies, retailers and installers.
Who Carries Out The Survey?
An accurate home survey is one of the most important stages of any kitchen renovation. Measurements, wall conditions, ceiling heights, flooring levels and existing services all need to be considered carefully before finalising a kitchen design.
Understanding who carries out the survey — and how detailed the process is — can help reduce the risk of fitting issues, delays or unexpected adjustments later in the project.
Who Installs The Kitchen?
Installation arrangements can vary significantly between kitchen companies. Some retailers may use subcontract fitting teams, while others work with dedicated installers or fully managed renovation teams.
Many homeowners prefer understanding exactly who will be responsible for the installation process, communication and on-site coordination before moving forward.
Is Project Management Included?
Kitchen renovations often involve more than simply fitting cabinets. Plumbing, electrics, plastering, flooring, decorating and appliance coordination may all form part of the wider project.
Clarifying whether project management is included can really help homeowners understand who will be coordinating trades, deliveries and timelines throughout the renovation. The value of this service is always overlooked.
What Happens If Items Are Damaged/Missing?
Occasionally, kitchen deliveries may arrive with missing, delayed or damaged components. Understanding how these situations are handled can provide reassurance and help set expectations should any issues arise during installation.
Clear communication and efficient resolution processes can make a significant difference to how smoothly a renovation progresses.
Are Structural Works Managed?
For homeowners planning open-plan kitchens, extensions or kitchen diner knock-throughs, it is important to understand whether the company has experience managing structural alterations and associated building work.
Projects involving RSJs, layout changes or building control approvals often require additional planning and coordination beyond a standard kitchen installation.
What Exactly Is Included In The Quote?
Kitchen quotations can vary considerably between suppliers. Some quotes may include installation, appliances or worktops, while others may focus purely on kitchen supply.
For this reason, it is always worth asking exactly what is — and isn’t — included within the quotation to help avoid confusion or unexpected costs later in the project.
Can Changes Be Made Once The Design Process Has Started?
During the planning process, many homeowners refine layouts, storage ideas or finish selections as the project develops. Asking how flexible the design process is can help homeowners understand how easily adjustments can be made before final orders are placed.
Who Will Be My Main Point Of Contact?
Kitchen renovations can last several weeks depending on the complexity of the project. Many homeowners value having one clear point of contact throughout the process to simplify communication and improve overall coordination.
What Aftercare Support Is Available?
Even after installation is complete, occasional adjustments, replacements or minor snagging items may arise. Understanding what aftercare support is available can help provide additional peace of mind once the project has been completed.
The right kitchen company for one homeowner may not necessarily be the right fit for another. Taking the time to ask detailed questions early in the process can help homeowners better understand how each company works and ultimately make a more informed decision.
Common Issues Homeowners Tell Us About When Comparing Kitchen Companies
Most homeowners will naturally compare a range of kitchen companies before making a final decision. During this process, many people also share past renovation experiences. They may share concerns or frustrations they faced. This can happen while researching suppliers, comparing quotes, or managing kitchen projects.
While each company works differently, many projects still run smoothly. Below are common issues homeowners tell us they want to avoid when planning a kitchen renovation.
Pressured Sales Tactics

Some homeowners tell us they felt pressure to decide quickly because of limited-time offers, discounts, or promo deadlines. While promotions are part of retail marketing, many homeowners want time to compare layouts, specs, prices, and renovation needs.

Unclear Quotes

Kitchen quotations can sometimes vary significantly in what they include. Some homeowners tell us they first found it hard to compare quotes clearly. This was especially true when costs were not fully broken down early on. This included installation work, appliances, worktops, or renovation costs.
Understanding exactly what is included within a quotation can help avoid confusion later in the project.

Hidden Renovation Costs

In some cases, homeowners only become aware of additional renovation requirements once work has already started. Older homes may have uneven walls or floors. Old wiring, plumbing changes, or structural work can change the final project scope.
This is one reason why detailed surveys and realistic project planning are often so important from the outset. Having local kitchen fitters in your area such as Manchester is advisable. They know the types of houses and what can and cannot be achieved easily.

Missing Items Or Delayed Items

Kitchen renovations rely on multiple components arriving correctly and on time. Occasionally, homeowners tell us they face delays from missing, damaged, or incorrect items. This can affect installation schedules and project timelines.
Clear communication and efficient issue resolution can make a significant difference when these situations arise.

Inaccurate Surveys Or Measurements

Accurate measuring is essential within kitchen design and installation. Homeowners occasionally tell us they have experienced issues where layouts, appliance spaces or cabinetry did not fit as expected once installation began.
A detailed home survey can help identify potential challenges before final orders are placed. Large national companies may use designers who have never fitted kitchens before so on paper it looks amazing and flashy however during the fitting it is obvious that it does not work in practice. This is where your local independent kitchen fitters come in and use their experience and knowledge to find workable solutions.

Homeowners Managing Trades Themselves

For larger renovations, homeowners may sometimes find themselves coordinating electricians, plumbers, plasterers, flooring installers and kitchen fitters separately.

Many people underestimate how much communication and scheduling can be involved in managing multiple trades throughout a renovation project.
Common Frustrations

Kitchen projects can involve several stages including design, surveying, ordering, deliveries and installation. Some homeowners tell us they found communication difficult when dealing with multiple departments or different points of contact throughout the process.
Consistent communication can play a major role in helping a renovation run smoothly.

Delays Between Departments

Larger kitchen companies may separate design, sales, surveying, installation and aftercare into different departments. While this structure works well for many projects, some homeowners tell us they found delays or misunderstandings occasionally occurred when information needed to pass between multiple teams.

Unclear Installation Responsibilities

Some homeowners tell us they were initially unsure who was responsible for coordinating certain aspects of the installation process, particularly when external trades or subcontract installers were involved.
Clarifying responsibilities early in the process can help homeowners better understand how the project will be managed from start to finish.

Every kitchen renovation is different, and many national retailers and independent kitchen companies deliver successful projects every day. However, understanding some of the common concerns homeowners experience during the comparison process can help people make more informed decisions when choosing the right company for their project.

Why Project Management Matters In Renovations
Many homeowners focus on how a new kitchen looks first. But a renovation also needs strong project management. Kitchen renovations can have many stages, trades, deliveries, and timelines. This is often true in older homes, extensions, or open-plan kitchen diner projects. Clear coordination and communication can help a renovation run smoothly. It can also reduce stress for the homeowner.
Coordinating Multiple Trades
Many kitchen renovations involve several different trades working together throughout the project. Depending on the scope of the renovation, this may include electricians, plumbers, plasterers, flooring installers, decorators and kitchen fitters.
Careful coordination between trades can help improve efficiency, reduce delays and ensure each stage of the project progresses in the correct order.
Managing Deliveries And Scheduling
Kitchen projects often rely on carefully timed deliveries of cabinetry, appliances, worktops and building materials. Delays or missing items can sometimes affect installation schedules and project timelines.
Good project management helps ensure deliveries, trades and installation stages are coordinated as smoothly as possible throughout the renovation.
Structural Alterations And Layout Changes
Many modern kitchen renovations now involve open-plan living, kitchen diner knock-throughs or structural layout changes. These projects may require RSJs, structural calculations, building control approvals and additional planning beyond a standard kitchen replacement.
Managing these elements correctly is often an important part of keeping larger renovations organised and compliant.
One Team Overseeing The Entire Process
One of the main reasons many homeowners value project management is the reassurance of having one team overseeing the renovation from start to finish.
Rather than coordinating separate suppliers, fitters and trades independently, many homeowners prefer having a clearer structure for communication, scheduling and overall responsibility throughout the project.
Reducing Stress Throughout The Renovation
Kitchen renovations can naturally feel disruptive while work is taking place within the home. Clear communication, realistic timelines and organised coordination can all help reduce uncertainty and improve the overall renovation experience for homeowners.
Renovation Experience Matters
Every property presents different challenges, particularly within older homes where uneven floors, outdated services or structural considerations may need to be addressed during the project.
Experience managing renovations as a whole — rather than simply supplying kitchen units — can often make a significant difference once work begins on site.
While every kitchen project is different, many homeowners find that strong project management and clear communication can be just as important as the kitchen design itself. Understanding how a company manages trades, timelines and renovation work behind the scenes can help homeowners make more informed decisions when comparing kitchen companies.
Kitchen Renovations In Older Manchester Homes
Kitchen renovations within older Manchester properties can often present different challenges compared to modern new-build homes. Across areas of Greater Manchester, many properties feature older layouts, uneven surfaces, chimney breasts, extensions or outdated services that may need to be considered during the renovation process.
Understanding the age, structure and layout of a property can play an important role when designing and planning a new kitchen renovation.
Victorian Terraces And Period Properties
Many homes across Manchester and the surrounding areas are Victorian terraces or older period properties. While these homes often offer character and generous room proportions, they can also present unique renovation considerations including uneven walls, alcoves, chimney breasts and older structural layouts.
Kitchen designs often need to be carefully adapted to suit the existing features of the property.
Uneven Walls And Floors
In older homes, walls and floors are not always perfectly level or square. These variations may affect cabinetry installation, worktop fitting and flooring preparation during the renovation process.
Careful surveying and experienced installation can help minimise issues once work begins on site.
Chimney Breasts And Existing Layouts
Many older Manchester homes still retain chimney breasts or original room layouts that influence how a kitchen can be designed. Some homeowners choose to work around these features, while others may consider structural alterations or layout changes to create a more open-plan living space.
Extensions And Open-Plan Renovations
Open-plan kitchens and kitchen diner knock-throughs have become increasingly popular within Manchester homes. These projects may involve extensions, structural alterations, RSJs and additional planning considerations depending on the property layout.
Careful coordination is often required to ensure the renovation progresses smoothly from both a structural and design perspective.
Older Plumbing And Electrical Systems
During renovations, older plumbing and electrical systems may sometimes need upgrading to suit modern kitchen appliances, lighting layouts or revised room configurations.
Identifying these considerations early in the planning stage can help reduce unexpected delays or additional work later in the project.
Structural Considerations
Some renovation projects may require structural calculations, steel supports or building control approval depending on the scale of the layout changes being planned.
Understanding these requirements from the outset can help homeowners better prepare for the full scope of the renovation.
Every property is different, and older homes often require a more tailored approach when planning a kitchen renovation. Taking the time to properly assess the structure, layout and condition of the property can help create a more practical, efficient and well-managed renovation process from start to finish.

Supply Only vs Fully Managed Kitchen Renovations
Kitchen companies can offer very different levels of service depending on how their business operates. Some suppliers focus purely on kitchen design and product supply, while others may offer installation services or fully managed renovations that include coordination of multiple trades and building works.
Understanding the differences between these approaches can help homeowners decide which type of service best suits their project, budget and level of involvement.
Supply Only Kitchens
A supply only kitchen typically includes the design, cabinetry, appliances and associated products, but not the installation or renovation work itself.
With this type of arrangement, the homeowner is usually responsible for organising installers, plumbers, electricians, flooring contractors and any associated building works separately.
For some straightforward projects, this can work well — particularly where homeowners already have trusted trades in place.
Fully Managed Kitchen Renovations
A fully managed kitchen renovation typically involves one team overseeing the wider project from initial design through to completion.
Depending on the scope of the renovation, this may include:

kitchen design and supply
installation
plumbing and electrics
plastering and flooring
structural alterations
RSJs and knock-throughs
project scheduling and trade coordination

Many homeowners prefer this approach for larger or more complex renovations where multiple stages and trades need to be carefully coordinated.
Understanding The Differences In Responsibility
One of the most important things homeowners can clarify early in the process is who will be responsible for managing each stage of the renovation.
This can include:

organising trades
coordinating deliveries
scheduling work
handling delays or missing items
communicating updates throughout the project

Understanding these responsibilities from the outset can help homeowners better compare quotations and avoid misunderstandings later in the renovation.
There is no single approach that suits every project. Some homeowners may prefer a simple supply only arrangement, while others value the convenience and coordination that a fully managed renovation can provide. Understanding how each company operates can help homeowners choose the level of support that best suits their renovation plans.

Who Is An Independent Kitchen Company Best Suited To?
Independent specialists may suit:

bespoke projects
knock-throughs
open-plan renovations
tailored layouts
older homes
homeowners wanting one point of contact

Every kitchen project is different, and the right supplier for one homeowner may not necessarily be the right fit for another. National kitchen retailers, trade suppliers and independent kitchen specialists can all suit different project types, budgets and renovation requirements.
However, many homeowners who choose to work with an independent kitchen company are often looking for a more tailored renovation experience, greater flexibility or additional project support throughout the process.
Bespoke Kitchen Projects
Independent kitchen specialists are often well suited to homeowners looking for more tailored layouts, custom finishes or design flexibility beyond standard showroom configurations.
This can be particularly beneficial for properties with unusual room shapes, specific storage requirements or more personalised design preferences.
Kitchen Diner Knock-Throughs And Structural Renovations
Projects involving open-plan living, extensions or structural alterations often require additional planning, coordination and renovation experience beyond a straightforward kitchen replacement.
Many homeowners planning knock-throughs or layout changes value working with companies experienced in managing both the kitchen installation and the wider renovation process together.
Open-Plan Living Spaces
Modern kitchen renovations increasingly form part of larger open-plan living areas rather than isolated kitchen rooms. These spaces often require careful consideration around layout flow, lighting, storage, seating and overall room functionality.
A more tailored design approach can sometimes help homeowners better integrate the kitchen within the wider living space.
Older Homes And Period Properties
Older homes can present unique design and renovation considerations including uneven walls, chimney breasts, extensions and non-standard room layouts.
Independent kitchen specialists often provide greater flexibility when adapting designs around the existing structure and character of older properties.
Homeowners Wanting One Point Of Contact
Many homeowners prefer having one main point of contact throughout the renovation process rather than dealing with separate departments, suppliers or trades independently.
For larger or more complex projects, clear communication and consistent coordination can play a major role in helping the renovation progress smoothly.
Homeowners Looking For A More Personal Experience
Some homeowners simply prefer a more personal and collaborative approach throughout the design and renovation process. Independent kitchen companies often work more closely with homeowners throughout planning, installation and aftercare, which can provide a different overall experience compared to larger retail environments.
There is no single kitchen company that suits every homeowner or project. The right choice often depends on the level of flexibility, renovation support and involvement a homeowner is looking for throughout the process. Taking the time to compare different approaches can help homeowners make a more informed and confident decision for their home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are independent kitchen companies more expensive?

Not always. While some independent kitchen companies may offer more bespoke design options or project management services, pricing can vary significantly depending on the scope of the renovation, cabinet specifications, installation requirements and chosen finishes.
In some cases, homeowners may also find greater flexibility in product selection and renovation support when working with an independent specialist.

Are rigid kitchen cabinets better than flat-pack?

Rigid kitchen cabinets arrive pre-assembled, while flat-pack kitchens are assembled on-site.
Many homeowners feel rigid cabinets offer a more solid feel and can speed up installation, although both systems can perform well depending on the overall cabinet construction and manufacturing quality.

Who installs kitchens from national retailers?

Installation arrangements vary between companies. Some kitchen retailers use approved subcontract installers, while others may offer installation through independent fitting teams.
It is always worth asking who will be responsible for surveying, installation and overall project coordination before proceeding.

What should I compare when buying a kitchen?

Price is only one part of the decision.
Homeowners may also wish to compare the following; cabinet construction, installation arrangements, project management, aftercare support, appliance choices, design flexibility, lead times and the experience of the company managing the renovation.

Are bespoke kitchens worth it?

For many homeowners, bespoke or tailored kitchens can provide better use of space, greater design flexibility and more personalised finishes.
Whether they are worth the investment often depends on the property, budget and how important customisation is to the homeowner.

What are the benefits of using a local kitchen company?

Many homeowners choose independent kitchen companies for the more personalised experience, flexible design options and direct communication throughout the renovation process.
Independent specialists may also offer full project management, structural renovation experience and tailored support for more complex kitchen projects.

Do kitchen companies manage the whole renovation?

This varies between suppliers. Some companies provide kitchen supply only, while others offer full project management including electrics, plumbing, plastering, flooring, structural alterations and installation coordination.
It is important to clarify exactly what is included within any quotation.

Should I choose a local kitchen company?

Many homeowners value the direct communication, accountability and local reputation that independent local kitchen companies can provide.
Local specialists may also have greater experience working with regional property styles, extensions and renovation projects.

Why does project management matter in kitchen renovations?

Kitchen renovations often involve multiple trades, deliveries and timelines.
Clear project management can help improve communication, reduce stress and ensure the project progresses more smoothly from start to finish.

What’s Involved
What to Know Before a Kitchen Diner Knock Through
While opening up your kitchen and dining room can transform your home, there are several important elements behind the scenes that need to be considered early on.
This includes structural design, approvals, and practical challenges that can affect both cost and timelines.
Structural Engineers & Building Regulations
Most knock-throughs involve removing a load-bearing wall, which means a structural engineer is required to design the steel beam and provide calculations. You’ll also need building regulations approval, and in some cases, a party wall agreement. For more useful information the government have create a booklet.
Hidden Considerations
Features like exposed steel beams look great aesthetically and may seem simple. However they require specialist fire-rated coatings, increasing both cost and lead time. Therefore many homeowners opt to have them hidden using special fire rated plasterboard rather than being exposed.
Practical Challenges
Not everything works exactly as planned on paper. Access, installation constraints, and existing structure can all influence how the project is delivered. For example, if the steel was designed as one length, there may not be enough room to manoeuvre it. The engineer may need to redesign it as two sections to place it in position. Having a knowledge and experienced kitchen fitter comes in here and can offer constructive challenge.

Our Process For Kitchen Diner Knock Throughs
Every project is different, but over the years we’ve developed a process that keeps things efficient, safe, and properly managed from start to finish.
1. Initial Call – Understanding Your Plans
We discuss your plans, understand your goals, and assess whether the project is the right fit. We can sometimes provide a rough ballpark to ensure expectations align. We also prefer clients to have already:

Spoken to a structural engineer
Considered building regulations
Looked into party wall agreements (if required)

This avoids delays further down the line.
2. Site Visit – Assessing the Space Properly
We assess layout, structure, and services, and discuss kitchen styles, finishes, and layout ideas. At this stage, we: Look at your plans for the new space

Assess structural elements
Review plumbing, electrics, and layout
Discuss kitchen styles (doors, cabinets, worktops)

In some cases, we may need to open up a small section (like a ceiling or wall) to properly understand the structure.
3. Working With Engineers
We work alongside structural engineers to ensure designs are practical and achievable on site.

Ensure we fully understand their plans
Flag anything that may not be practical on site
Help avoid issues before work begins..

4. Build Phase
Once everything is approved, the build begins. This typically includes:

Full kitchen rip-out (we can retain appliances if needed)
Stripping back to brick if replastering throughout
Replacing windows or doors (if part of the project)
Preparing floors and removing features like coving where required

The structural work is then carried out safely:

The wall is supported using acrows and timber
The wall is removed
The steel beam (RSJ) is installed

We document this stage with photos, and a building inspector will usually attend to sign off the structural work. At the same time, first fix electrics and plumbing are carried out.
5. Kitchen Installation
We complete the full kitchen installation, including all trades.

Fitting kitchen cabinets
Installing doors and worktops
Completing plumbing and electrics
Final finishes and detailing

This is where everything comes together — transforming two separate rooms into one functional, open-plan living space.
Costs
How Much Does a Kitchen Diner Knock Through Cost?
Typical Range: £30,000 – £40,000+ (excluding appliances and decorating). This usually includes structural work, plastering, electrics, plumbing, and full kitchen installation. How much does a new kitchen cost in manchester?
What Affects the Cost?
No two projects are exactly the same, and there are a few key factors that can increase the overall cost.
• Structural design (goal posts) and steel requirements • Kitchen specification and finishes • Windows, doors, or bi-fold installations • Access and installation complexity
We can often provide a rough ballpark early on to make sure expectations align before progressing. To enable us to do this, we need to see the house. We also need to know the kitchen type, such as solid wood doors. We also need to understand the desired kitchen style such as Traditional, Modern, Handleless, Bespoke. Worktop material is key to the kitchen’s design and function. Many options are now available to clients, such as quartz, wood, and laminate.
Advice Before You Start Kitchen Diner Knock Through
Stay Or Move
Consider whether improving your current home is a better option than relocating.
Think Long Term
If you are planning an extension in the future, it is a good idea to make sure the knock-through works with your long-term plans. Is the forever home that needs to be futureproofed for when you may become less mobile.
Be Realistic About Budget
Features like Aluminumum bi-fold doors, bespoke kitchens, and structural changes can significantly increase costs.
Look At Similiar Homes
See what neighbours have done and learn from their experience.
Engage a Structural Engineer Early
This helps avoid delays and ensures the project is planned properly.
Create A Mood Board
This helps communicate your vision clearly and speeds up the design process.
Conclusion
A kitchen diner knock-through is one of the most effective ways to transform how your home works and feels.
Done properly, it creates:

A brighter, more open space
A true central hub for family life
A layout that suits modern living

However like any structural project, it needs to be planned carefully. Delivered by people who understand both the design and the building side of things.

Do I need planning permission for a kitchen diner knock through?

In most cases, no — removing an internal wall falls under permitted development.
However, you will still need:

Structural engineer calculations
Building regulations approval
A party wall agreement if the property is attached

It’s important to have these in place before any work begins to avoid delays or issues later.

How long does a kitchen diner knock through take?

The structural knock-through itself is usually completed within a few days, including installing the steel beam.
However, the full project — including building work, plastering, and kitchen installation — typically takes 3 to 6 weeks. This does depend on the size and complexity.
We always advise allowing enough time for approvals and planning before work starts.

Is a kitchen knock through messy and disruptive?

Yes — there is a level of disruption, especially during the structural phase.
Removing a wall and installing a steel beam involves:

Dust and noise
Temporary structural supports
Restricted access to parts of the home

We always recommend keeping the area clear and planning around this stage, particularly if you have children at home.
The disruption is short-term, but the end result is a long-term improvement to how your home works.

Will a kitchen diner knock through add value to my home?

Open-plan kitchen diners are one of the most desirable features for modern buyers.
While we do not provide formal valuations, it can greatly improve a home’s appeal and usability. This is especially true when paired with a well-designed kitchen.

Key Things To Prepare Before Fitting A New Kitchen
We have create a useful guide to walk you through some practical tips on how to prepare your kitchen before installation.
Planning a new kitchen is exciting, but many homeowners do not realise this. The preparation before installation plays a huge role in how smoothly the project runs.
As experienced kitchen fitters in Manchester, we have worked on hundreds of installations across Prestwich and the surrounding areas. The projects that run best are always the ones where the client is properly prepared before we arrive on site.
On the flip side, we have also seen first-hand how poor preparation can lead to delays, stress and unnecessary disruption. If you are about to have a new kitchen installed, here’s exactly how to prepare — based on real experience from working in homes just like yours.

Why Preparation Matters More Than You Think
Kitchen installations do not just involve fitting cabinets — they often include multiple trades, structural work, electrics and plumbing. Without proper preparation, even small oversights can cause major disruption.
We have seen situations where:

Appliances were not ordered in time, delaying the entire project
We arrived to start work and cupboards were still full
Items were damaged because they were not moved or protected
Materials were not stored correctly and became unusable

In some cases, delays can even affect tradespeople’s schedules, which can push your project back further than expected.
Good preparation avoids all of this.
Your Preparation Timeline (From Our Experience)
Begin by decluttering. Be honest with yourself. Most kitchens are full of old containers with missing lids, out-of-date food, and items that haven’t been used in years. This is the perfect opportunity to clear out what you don’t need and donate anything useful. You should also:

Prepare a storage area in another room
Make space for kitchen deliveries
Ensure all appliances are ordered and checked with your fitter
Confirm delivery dates align with your install schedule
Finalise choices such as handles, lighting and sockets
Clear access routes into the property

If you are also having structural work done (such as removing walls or installing steels). It is a good idea to discuss with your fitters about ways to protect the rest of your home from dust.
2–3 Weeks Before Kitchen Installation
At this stage, it’s about refining and confirming everything.

Continue clearing out the kitchen and utility rooms
Double-check all orders and deliveries due dates
Review your kitchen plans again carefully
Communicate any changes immediately

Even small changes — like adding a boiling water tap — can impact electrics, plumbing or cabinet sizing. Also consider:

Finalise your booking decorators (if needed)
Confirming skip hire or waste removal company
Checking if permits are required for your skip

1 Week Before Kitchen Installation
Now it becomes more practical.

Make sure the kitchen is nearly empty
Have cleaning supplies ready / especially if there is building work
Plan how you will manage meals, washing and laundry
Decide whether you need to give your fitter access (e.g. a key)

Many clients underestimate this stage — but this is where preparation makes a big difference to your day-to-day comfort.

The Day Before Kitchen Installation
Now it becomes more practical.

Fully empty the kitchen including;
cupboards, fridge and freezer Unless required
Double-check deliveries and outstanding items
Make sure access is clear for the fitters

And most importantly… have a cup of tea and relax — you are ready.
Real Problems We have Seen (And How to Avoid Them)
From experience, the most common issues are:
Appliances Are Not Ordered in Time

creates delays.
key items are missing during fitting.
This can disrupts schedules and can delay completion.

Kitchen Not Fully Emptied
We have turned up to start a job and found:

cupboards still full
food left in place
washing up in the sink
This slows everything down from day one.

Poor Storage of Materials

Items such as below must be stored flat
If not, they can warp or
become damaged before they are even installed
kitchen doors
long panels
wooden flooring

Plan How You Will Live During the Kitchen Renovation
This is one of the most overlooked areas. For 4–5 weeks, your kitchen may be unusable:
Plan Ahead

Where will you cook?
How will you wash up?
What about laundry?

Some clients:

use meal delivery services
set up temporary kitchen areas
use a gym or family homes for facilities
even hire temporary outdoor kitchens

Also consider:

children and pets
work schedules
noise and disruption

A little planning here makes a huge difference.

If you’re planning a kitchen renovation & want to avoid delays, our team can guide you through the entire process from preparation – installation

How far in advance should I start preparing for a kitchen installation?

Ideally, you should begin preparing at least 4–6 weeks before your kitchen installation. This gives you enough time to declutter, organise storage space, confirm appliance orders and finalise design details. Leaving preparation until the last minute is one of the most common causes of delays and added stress during a kitchen renovation.

How do I prepare my house for a kitchen renovation?

Preparing your house for a kitchen renovation goes beyond just clearing the kitchen itself.
You should also think about how the work will affect the rest of your home.
We recommend:

Removing or protecting valuables such as mirrors, artwork and furniture
Taking down curtains and soft furnishings where dust may travel
Creating a temporary kitchen or meal preparation area
Planning how you will manage washing, laundry and day-to-day living

If the work is structural, like removing walls or adding steel beams, there will be more dust and disruption.
Taking the time to prepare properly will make the renovation far more manageable and reduce stress during the installation.

Do I need to completely empty my kitchen before installation starts?

Yes — your kitchen should be fully emptied before your installers arrive, including cupboards, worktops, and appliances such as the fridge and freezer. This allows the team to start work immediately and safely. Any remaining items can slow down the process and increase the risk of damage.

What can delay a kitchen installation?

There are several common factors that can delay a kitchen installation. Many of which can be avoided with proper planning.
The most frequent issues we see include:

Appliances not being ordered or delivered on time
Last-minute design changes after work has started
Kitchens not being fully cleared before installation
Missing or incorrect materials
Poor coordination between trades

We’ve also experienced situations where we’ve had to leave a job temporarily because key items weren’t available, which can disrupt schedules and extend timelines.
In our experience, the projects that run the smoothest are always the ones where everything has been checked, ordered and prepared in advance.

What are the most common mistakes to avoid before a kitchen installation?

Some of the most common mistakes include:

Not ordering appliances in time
Leaving the kitchen partially full
Making last-minute design changes
Not planning how to live without a kitchen

From experience, these issues can cause delays, disruption, and added stress. They are easy to avoid with good planning and clear communication.

Can I stay in my home during a kitchen renovation?

Yes, most homeowners stay in their home during a kitchen renovation. However, it’s important to plan ahead, as your kitchen may be unusable for several weeks. Setting up a temporary cooking area will make the process easier. Planning meals ahead will help too. Prepare for dust and noise.

What should I do before kitchen fitters arrive?

Before your kitchen fitters arrive, the most important thing is to ensure the space is fully prepared so work can begin immediately.
This includes:

Emptying all cupboards, worktops and appliances
Clearing access into the property and kitchen area
Making space for deliveries and materials
Confirming that all appliances have arrived and are ready to install

From our experience, one of the biggest delays we see is when a kitchen is only partially cleared or key items are missing. Even small things like leaving food in cupboards or items in the sink can slow down the start of the project.
A well-prepared space lets your kitchen fitter start right away. It also helps the installation run more smoothly.

How much does a kitchen cost in the UK?

The average cost of a new kitchen in the UK is £8,000 – £15,000. Budget kitchens start from around £5,000, while premium bespoke kitchens often exceed £25,000.

What affects the cost of a new kitchen the most?

The biggest factors that influence the cost of a new kitchen are:

Cabinetry – This is usually the largest cost. Bespoke or painted kitchens cost more than standard ranges.
Worktops – Quartz, granite and solid surfaces increase the overall budget compared to laminate.
Layout changes – Moving sinks, appliances or walls adds plumbing, electrical and building costs.
Appliances – Premium brands can significantly increase your total spend.
Labour & installation – A fully managed installation with electrics, plumbing and finishing work will cost more but ensures everything is done properly.

In Manchester, kitchens that involve structural work like knock-throughs or steel beams will naturally cost more than a simple replacement.

Are kitchen design consultations free?

Yes. Many companies — including NMB — offer free home design visits, measurements and 3D visuals so you can see your kitchen before committing.
Our design service is available via ourKitchen Designers in Manchester

Is it cheaper to supply your own kitchen and find a fitter?

It can appear cheaper initially, but separating kitchen supply and installation can make responsibility less clear if problems arise. A fully managed service gives you one point of contact for design, ordering, installation and any associated building work.
At NMB, we provide complete kitchen projects rather than fit-only services, allowing us to manage the whole process and ensure everything works together from design through to completion.

Can i get my kitchen on finance?

NMB does not currently offer kitchen finance. We provide a detailed quotation before work begins so you can clearly see what is included in your project and plan your budget accordingly.

Is it cheaper to replace or renovate a kitchen?

In most cases, a straight kitchen replacement is cheaper than a full renovation.

Replacement (lower cost)Keeping the same layout and simply installing new units, worktops and appliances is the most cost-effective option.
Renovation (higher cost)Changing the layout, moving plumbing or electrics, or removing walls will increase costs due to additional labour and materials.

However, a full renovation often delivers better long-term value by improving layout, storage and how the space works for your home.

Question 11

Boost Your Home Value by 10%

Accepted Answer

Does a New Kitchen Add Value to Your Home?
 skip render: ucaddon_blox_btn_group
How a New Kitchen Can Add Value to Your Home
As a homeowner, you want every space in your house to reflect your personal taste while also boosting its long-term value. The kitchen — often considered the heart of the home — plays a central role in both. It’s where families gather, meals are shared, and lasting memories are made.
A thoughtfully designed kitchen can improve a property’s appeal to buyers and may add to its market value, although the amount will vary depending on the property, location, specification and wider housing market.. The good news? Transforming your kitchen into a functional and stylish showpiece is more accessible than ever, whether you’re updating fixtures, changing layouts, or going for a full renovation.

Can a new kitchen really increase the value of my home — and by how much?

Yes — a modern, well-designed kitchen can improve a home’s appeal and may increase its resale value. However, there is no fixed percentage: the effect will depend on the property, location, quality of the renovation and how much is invested compared with the overall value of the home.

Does It Matter Whether I Make a Minor Update or Complete a Full Kitchen Renovation?

Yes — the scope of the work matters. Smaller updates such as new worktops, doors or appliances can improve a kitchen’s appearance without the cost of a full renovation. A complete renovation involves a larger investment but may deliver greater benefits where the existing kitchen has a poor layout, limited storage or needs significant updating. The right approach depends on the condition of the kitchen, the property and your long-term plans.

How much should I reasonably spend on a kitchen renovation if I want to protect resale value?

There isn’t a single ideal percentage to spend on a kitchen renovation. A sensible budget depends on the value of your home, the condition of the existing kitchen, how long you plan to stay and the standard expected in your local market. The aim is to improve the property without over-investing beyond what similar homes in the area are likely to support.

What features or qualities in a new kitchen are most likely to add value (rather than just cost)?

Kitchens that add the most value tend to: have high-quality materials and finishes, modern styling that appeals broadly rather than ultra-personalised touches, functional layouts, good storage, up-to-date appliances, and smart design that fits the rest of the home.

If I’m not planning to sell right away, is a new kitchen still worth it?

Yes — even if you stay in the home for several years, a modern, well-functioning kitchen improves daily living and likely enhances the home’s long-term resale value. In the meantime, you benefit from improved comfort, usability, and perhaps lower maintenance costs compared to an old or outdated kitchen. Many experts agree that kitchen renovations remain one of the smartest investments for overall home value and desirability.
